Columbus Day is an annual U.S. federal holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October. Columbus Day honors the date of October 12, 1492, when the Italian navigator Christopher Columbus landed in the New World on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. The day was proclaimed a holiday in 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Although Columbus may not have been the first European to cross the Atlantic and reach land, he put down the foundations of the first enduring encounter between Europeans and the Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere.
