Hemoglobin questions...
I had bloodwork done last week and just received the results in the mail. I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff but think I have deciphered that I'm not a diabetic, but my hemoglobin levels appear to be low according to my research. Hemoglobin Levels "Hemoglobin is measured in grams per deciliter of blood. The normal levels are: Women: 12.1 to 15.1 gm/dl" My Hemoglobin results A1C - 5.8. I don't know how gm/dl compare with A1C. ??? Help! LOL! I do know that low hemoglobin levels are a sign of anemia, which would not surprise me at all due to the female issues I have been dealing with. Believe it or not, I'm looking forward to my appointment with my GYN next week!
HbA1c is a measurement of your glycoslyated hemoglobin measured as a percentage. This means that the glucose (sugar) in your blood sticks to hemoglobin and is an indicator of how good your sugar is controlled over a period of 3 months. (Yours is good!). Of your hemoglobin 5.8% of it has sugar stuck to it. That value rises if your sugars run too high. Regular hemoglobin (not A1c) is a different measurement and would be part of what is called a CBC or an H&H. It is reported separately from the HbA1c. From the HbA1c you cannot determine if someone is anemic. You would need the values from the CBC or H&H (which are usually part of routine blood work). Hope that helps.
THANK YOU for explaining, Kelly!
5.8 is good! You would want it under 7.
I recently had labs done and my blood sugar was 93 and my Hgb A1C was 5.8, too. Phew. Doc is worried about me developing diabetes, but so far, it's still good. I'm trying to eat less, to lose some weight and I need to get out and exercise more.
