Anyone know how to rid of tomato sauce stains?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2007: Anyone know how to rid of tomato sauce stains?

My DD dipped her sleeve of her brand new white sweater in tomato sauce. I sprayed it with spray n wash twice and have washed it twice, and there is still an orange stain. Normally I wouldn't care so much, but I just bought it for her to wear for Easter, and since it is still 40 degrees here... Any ideas?

I would love to hear this as well. If there's one thing I can RARELY get out is anything involved with tomato...pizza sauce, ketchup, spaghetti sauce. I normally rinse it immediately with cold water and bar soap, then it soaks in Oxy Clean before I launder it (again with Oxy Clean and regular detergent). It doesn't get it out - still a light orange stain.

I would love to hear other suggestions also.

Problem is you may have set the stain by already washing it twice.
I would try Oxy-clean. It has saved me a few times.

Also running extremely hot/boiling water over tomato based stains has worked for me.

Pour some dishwashing liquid on it, and let it sit awhile. That has helped with ketchup stains. I mean the liquid you use to handwash dishes. (The hint called for Dawn, but I hardly ever buy Dawn, so I have just used whatever I have in the house.)

I don't know if this will still work, after being washed. As long as you didn't put it in the dryer, the stain won't be set. If you have put it in the dryer, you might be stuck.

I think spray and wash doesn't always work, esp for tomato stains.

Hints from Heloise:

Ketchup, Tomato Sauce Stains

If you get these red stains on your clothing, remove any excess and then soak the garment in cold water - if okay on care label. Check it, and if you still see a stain, rub white-bar soap or liquid laundry detergent into the affected area. Then wash in detergent and warm water.

Believe it or not, Cascade liquid dishwasher detergent, or Resolve carpet cleaner have worked for me in the past!

I have never had anything that shout could not get out. It sometimes required two washings along with letting the shout soak in the stains for a day. Also wash in cold water.
Tomato sauce has never been a problem. The only thing I've had difficulty with is chocolate.
Good luck.

Cocoabutter - That's exactly what I do with ketchup and tomato stains. My mom always told me that and it doesn't work! :) Very frustrating for me. I've never used Shout...it's worth trying for sure.

Ame- I've never had a problem with chocolate, LOL:) I do the exact same thing to chocolate as Ii do with tomate/ketchup. It always come right out. I just use the bar soap in my shower with cold water before oxy-cleaning it.

Try using spray -n- wash and use small nail brush if you can thats what I use and it works for me just let it sit a couple minutes then put in wash. Good Luck

Thanks everyone for the ideas, I havent put it in the dryer just through the wash. I'll try the dishsoap next, and if that doesnt work, i'll have to buy the shout or oxy clean. I usually am able to get stains out with spray n wash, even grease stains. If it is still stained, oh well, we will still wear it :)
