How Do You Get Your Rings To Fit When Your Knuckle Is Huge??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2007: How Do You Get Your Rings To Fit When Your Knuckle Is Huge??
By Kate on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 09:21 pm:

Okay, I have ugly hands. So why I bother to decorate them with rings is I guess a mystery...cause it sure doesn't help. At any rate, my knuckles of my ring fingers are larger than the bottom area where the rings actually go. As a result, my rings SPIN like CRAZY and drive ME crazy! (I know ladies, it takes so little....) Anyway, do any of you have this problem, and more importantly, the solution?? The jeweler says ring guards are not good for the rings as they scratch the band and they are not for permanent, everyday use. They suggested 'sizing beads' at $40 a ring....eeek! They are small, 14K gold balls they solder onto the back of the inside of the ring and supposedly they anchor the ring in place. I have my doubts.... If I make the rings any smaller I will have major trouble getting them on and off. And I think they will STILL spin 'cause no matter what the ring area is smaller than the knuckle. I'm not surprised my engagement ring spins since it is a single large stone that is top heavy, but I just got a diamond band that spins, too!! I'm so annoyed! They are just tiny diamonds encrusted in the band so I didn't think they'd spin!! They're not top heavy or anything like that! They're just BAD!!! Very, very BAD!! Any ideas? Anyone ever had the sizing beads put in? If I did make them smaller and forced them on my hands (I don't take them off, but I know they'd have to be cut off if I was in the hospital if I make them smaller) do you think it would stop the spinning? (I know, I already said I doubt it, but I'm seeking your opinions, too, even though you can't see my hands or the difference in the size of my finger from knuckle to bottom....I'm so very helpful....) Do all of your rings spin?? Is your head spinning by now? :)

I would be leery of the sizing beads - I have never heard of them and to me that would seem worse than any scratch from a ring guard. I also have the "spinning" issue. It bothers me sometimes but mostly I just deal with it :)

And I doubt you have ugly hands :)

I have the same problem :( My rings constantly spin.I actually just tolerate it.I find they don't spin as much in the summer.

I used to work in a jewelry store and my mother had the same problem with her rings. My store manager suggested the arthritic balls and my mother tried them out, but they weren't comfortable to her. Besides ring guards and arthritic balls, I don't know what else can be done.

I wonder if you can buy a ring that is like a bracelet with a tiny hinge? (Partially kidding.) My brother is a jewelry designer...I'll ask him.

It depends what time of the month it is. If I'm PMSing, then it doesn't spin, because my fingers are a bit more swollen, especially in the summer, when it's warm outside.

If I've just had my period and I don't have the extra fluid on board, then sometimes it spins a bit.

I got my finger closed in a car door about a year or two ago. I didn't wear my ring, for about a year, because my finger swelled up too much and it never seemed to go away, so after a year had gone by, I got the ring resized and it's so much more comfortable now.

So sometimes it spins and sometimes it doesn't, but it's not that annoying, so not enough to deal with it.

Right now, no... I gave away my monthly issues this past July (my gosh it has almost been a year, LOL) so I can't blame that.. I will blame mine on (HHMMM, lets see) toooo much salt... Yeah, that is it too much salt... Retaining water you know, ten years worth of it, ya think???

Anyway, No I am swollen.. I am on long term steroid treatment for some health issues and they have me blown up like a balloon animal.. However..... My rings used to spin, I wish they were spinning right now, funny how you wish for things you use to hate.....

I wore a sizer on my class ring during high school because the jeweler insisted that I would grow.. I hadn't grown since 7th grade but sure whatever.. Wish I had grown but nope not in the cards, LOL! It came in and it was HUGE... They had to put a sizer on it and it still spun.. So I don't think that is a cure... It won't stop the spinning you will just walk around with the sizer on the front of your hand and rings you just can't stop spinning... LOL

What about knuckle replacement??? Might be easier???

By Kate on Friday, April 6, 2007 - 09:15 am:

Knuckle replacement, LOL!! That would be the most attractive option!! If your class ring was HUGE then the sizing beads wouldn't have helped, no. These rings aren't HUGE so I'm hoping they will work. I saw a pic online of a ring with sizing beads in. One on each lower side and they were flat knobs that apparently anchor the ring in place. I stumbled upon a site where Serious Ring People discuss...their rings....yeah, whatever! Anyway, goodness there are a lot of expensive solutions!! One can get a 'bridge' put in, which last about six years. One can get a clasp/hinge and put it on like a bracelet. One can get a spring that stretches the ring shank at the bottom as it slides over your knuckle, then you snap it back into place. These solutions START at $250. I wish I could get collagen implants or Botox in my finger base. :)

Ditto Claire. I don't know ANYone who has perfect fingers in the first place, and as most of us age, our knuckles tend to develop *some* stage of arthritis - mine sure have! My rings spin and I just turn them right back.

By Tink on Friday, April 6, 2007 - 11:28 am:

I'd be willing to donate some finger fat for a transplant, Kate! *wink* I have very small hands but they have a chubby, child-like look to them and I've always hated that. At least you've shown me a benefit to all of that. No spinning rings here.

I wonder if some fixing wax wouldn't work? You know, the kind that you rub and it softens a bit, and you can use to fix china in place in a cabinet?
Just a thought ... got to try it.

I have arthritis in my hands. My knuckles are very knobby. I have to wear a larger ring to fit over the knuckle. We replaced my wedding set a few years ago. I have three rings stacked. 1 an eternity ring, 2 a diamond ring, 3 another eternity ring. The eternity rings anchor the diamond and it does not spin. If I were to wear just the diamond it will spin. The eternity rings have stones all the way around.
For my other rings I use ring guards.

By Kate on Friday, April 6, 2007 - 03:38 pm:

Yvonne, what are your ring guards like? Are they just clear, soft plastic things that go on the back of the shank? Or are they metal and attached to the ring with pliers? Do they work?? Are they very noticeable? Where did you get them? Thanks!

Fixing wax, Ame? I've never heard of that...I wonder if it would damage gold. I'd like to 'glue' them to the back of my finger base!! Where would one buy this product? Thanks!

By Yjja123 on Friday, April 6, 2007 - 04:13 pm:

A jeweler made mine. They are similar to the kind you attach with pliers.
Here are some options:
