Another torn ACL

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2007: Another torn ACL
By Reds9298 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 01:50 pm:

I fear my Mama's Boy, Riffer, has another torn ACL on the other leg. He had this surgery about a year and a half ago, and now the other leg is acting the same. I have no idea what he might have done to it. I left the yard, he was fine, returned an hour later and he was limping.

I'm bummed about the $ of course, but more sad because I hate to see my 'baby' not feeling well. Plus, we've been through this before and it was NOT fun for him. I felt so bad for him then, and it took about 7mths. to fully recover with no more limping.

I'm taking him in this afternoon and I will be very surprised if that's not it. They told us the first time around that it's common in dogs who have one side go, that the other will often follows later at some point.

He's a Jack, and to see a very athletic and active dog on three wheels is a bummer. He's my boy. :( Wish us luck.

Hope everything turns out this afternoon. PLease let us know....Poor Riffer!

By Ginny~moderator on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 02:03 pm:

Sasha had just the same thing. One ACL one year, and the other the next. Lots of sympathy to you and Riffer.

By Jackie on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 02:04 pm:

Hope you get good news at the vet.. My Golden retriever had it done last July...I hope my golden doesnt need the other one done. It gets costly. I know that if she plays too rough, or I walk her too long, she limps a bit still. The more she stays off her back leg, the better she seems to be.

By Reds9298 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 05:48 pm:

Yep, ACL again. I feel terrible. I hate to see him in pain after that surgery and so helpless from the dog he usually is. Jackie- You're so right! Riff took about 6-8mths. to quit limping completely. He hasn't limped at all on the other now for about 6mths., but now we're starting over with the second one.

Yes, costly. Areye, aye, aye...it's always something.

By Annie2 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 06:34 pm:

Ah, the poor thing! When all is said and done, what is the final cost to repair a ACL?

Is Riffer in any pain?

By Reds9298 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 08:26 pm:

He is in some pain right now, but really not too much unless you push or squeeze on the area. (He didn't like the exam needless to say!) He just can't jump up and down from things, and struggles to get up or lie down.

It's around $800 for each leg. :( I actually think that's cheaper than some areas!

By Annie2 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 08:44 pm:

I thought it would be in the thousands. $800 is alot but not too bad. When will he have the surgery?

By Reds9298 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 09:25 pm:

Tuesday morning was the soonest he could get in.

By Yjja123 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 09:27 pm:

Poor dog! Poor you! $800 is a lot of $

By Ginny~moderator on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 11:24 pm:

Deanna, you have no idea how much cheaper. Scott had to take Sascha to an orthopedic specialty vet in our area, and it was $2,800 for the first one and $3,000 for the second one (about 14+ months later).

By Dawnk777 on Friday, March 30, 2007 - 11:59 pm:

Yikes, poor Riff. Hope the surgery helps!

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, March 31, 2007 - 02:06 am:

Poor guy! I hope he gets better! :(

By Jackie on Saturday, March 31, 2007 - 05:10 am:

When my dog had it done last summer it cost us $1300

By Cat on Saturday, March 31, 2007 - 10:05 am:

Poor Riff! We have new neighbors at the end of our street and they have two Jacks. One's black and white and the other is tan. They're cuties! I hope Riff's feeling better soon and the surgery doesn't break you guys. Hugs

How's Riffer :)

My boy Remington needed ACL surgery today:( I just talked to the vet and he's doing fine.:) He has to wear a Duragesic patch for 3 days and take antibiotics for 14 days. When we pick him up tommorrow they'll show us some physio and when to do heat/cold.I REALLY miss him and wish he was home. The vet said there's a 30% chance of it happening in the other leg.:( I forgot to give the vet his favorite toy :(

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 09:47 pm:

Oh Sherri! I'm sorry about your puppers. What were the antibiotics for? I'm sure he will be just fine. It's hard to see them in pain, SO hard. Riff is doing fantastic! Much better than the first time around and he had to have 2 fat tumors removed in his chest and stomach as well, so I really thought this would be worse. He's been using the leg off and on for about a week, which is a huge improvement from last time. Our vet also told us that it's common for both legs to tear, so we were KIND OF expecting it but still keeping our fingers crossed.

I hope Remington heals quickly.:) Keep me posted!

Lots of prayers, for your furry one. I'm sorry he needed surgery.

I'm glad Riff is feeling better.

HE'S HOME :)

Gosh,we sure did miss him last night and this morning. He's doing really well.:)We need to take the pain patch off him on Friday night and they said antibiotics are always given when surgery is involved.I got the vet to call in some liquid antibiotics where I work because it's cheaper to buy.He needs to go back in 14 days to have the staples removed. We need to massage add heat/cold and do range of motions with him 2-3 times a day.Since we have laminate floors we'll have to towel walk with him for now. Thanks for your well wishes and I'll keep yas posted.:)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 02:09 pm:

I'm glad he's back with you.
