Pet Peeve - Cell phone use in a public restroom

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2007: Pet Peeve - Cell phone use in a public restroom
By Marg on Friday, February 23, 2007 - 07:22 am:

I'm not really big on cell phone use. Maybe it's because I live in the mountains and cell phone reception is very hard to find at times.

3 incidents in the past 4 months have really disturbed me.

Last night I was in a mall restroom going to the bathroom and a woman walks in (I thought there were two people). She is talking away. I get out of the bathroom to go wash my hands and the whole time she is on the cell phone while going to the bathroom. She walks past me, gives me a dirty look (like are listening to my conversation) and walks directly out of the restroom without washing her hands.

WHAT IS IT WITH TALKING ON A PHONE AND GOING TO THE BATHROOM?

It seems it is the younger generation (sorry but all three times it was girls looked to be 25 or younger). Do they not have respect for others let alone themselves? I do not care if they do this at home but in a public restroom? I could never be on the phone and talking to someone while going to the bathroom.

And btw, they do speak louder than normal because it is a bathroom with the fans, running water and flushing toilets. AARRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!

I'm sorry but this disturbs me immensely.

Nope. People talk loud on cellphones, no matter where they are! I went to put a patient in a room yesterday, and there was this guy on a cellphone, in the waiting area, who was talking so loud. This, despite a sign that you shouldn't be using your cellphone in the first place.

My husband seems to talk loud on his cellphone, too. I think they think the other person won't be able to hear them.

No, I couldn't talk to someone and go to the bathroom. You would think the other person could hear! The nerve of her to glare at you for eavesdropping, there is nothing private about a phone call! LOL!

What about the people who have the little headset thing on.........I work in a library and people will come up to check out books and be talking up a storm. You don't know if they are talking to you or who? Heaven forbid I ask them if they are talking to me........noooooooo,a hateful look will follow! I myself think they look nuts. I also can't stand the walkie talkie phones. I DO NOT want to hear there conversation!!!

OK, I feel better now, off to work!LOL

I have a tracfone for emergencies. I hate cell phones! It's good peace of mind in situations, but I don't get needing to be in constant conversation. My sil is famous for asking me is she can come over and watch a movie w/me or hang out with the kids, and then she sits in my livingroom talking on her cell phone, and she is a loud person to begin with! I finally told her to just stay home if she isn't going to be paying attention to us anyway. (That did not go over well btw) I'm in my twenties and I'm with you on the bathroom- ewww! I would not want to be talking to someone while they were taking care of business.

Talking on the phone while going to the bathroom is just gross. Even when i'm at home and on the phone i tell the person that i will call them back in a few minutes, or i just end the conversation if I have to go.
I find it very rude that people talk on the phone while checking out at the grocery store, i don't mind it in the store, as long as they are not talking loud enough so I hear their conversation.
In a long car ride, my dh will talk on the phone for a looong time. Although it is for work, i always tell him that he needs to leave work at work because we are going away as a family and that includes the car ride. Plus it makes me nervous when he drives while talking on the phone.

At least you are in a public place when people are talking on their phones in the restroom and you don't know them. My old boss does this all the time. I still work with her just not for her. And it is the most annoying thing ever! She talks to her husband (who everyone in the building knows since we only have 40 employees).

I am one of those people who has a hard time going to the bathroom if someone else is in there anyway. How am I supposed to feel about it when they are talking on the phone. I find talking on a cell phone in the restroom extremely rude and very inconsiderate.

My mom has a major peeve about this, and it is why she will not own a cell phone. My grandma has a neighbor who has 2 kids and is always on her phone. Grandma says that she has watched her neighbor lady take out the trash and unload groceries all the while talking on the cell phone. She also says that maybe eventually humans will evolve with a specially shaped ear that would allow us to simply hang our cell phones on our ears thus freeing up our hands. :)

I haven't had too many experiences where people on cell phones really bug me. I do think that cell phones have invaded society to such a degree that common courtesy for others has gone the way of the dinosaur. It's as if the person on the phone is the only person in the universe who matters.

In the bathroom that is just gross!
I have a cell phone and would never think to talk on it in the potty.

Another thing that is annoying is texting during a movie. Someone a bunch of rows in front of me, had their screen lit up, for nearly the whole movie, but they weren't talking. I found that just as annoying as talking on the phone! I kept seeing the light on the screen!

I used to have a cell phone. It drove me nuts how often it rang. It was rarely anything so important that it couldn't wait until I was home. I hated feeling like I was always attached to a phone. When the contract ran out, I happily stopped having a cell phone. My hubby was not pleased. Our compromise is I have onstar. If I need help, I have a phone. I no longer have to deal with being called all the time (I have not given the number out).
My peeve--the people who walk through a store and go through the lines while on a phone. I think it is very rude to the cashier. It slows down the process (can't get all your stuff on the register when you are cradling a phone to your ear). To me, talking on the cell phone while running errands is a very self centered thing. It is like saying you are so important that you can't get off the phone to pay for your purchase, or greet a cashier, or show respect for everyone around you who does not want to hear your conversation. Yep--Big peeve of mine :)

I saw a sign on a small convenience store recently that said in effect that they refused to wait on you if you were talking on your cell phone. I would love to see more businesses follow suit.

I consider talking on the phone - any phone - while using the bathroom rude. We really don't need to share EVERYTHING, do we?
