World's youngest preemie going home!
A baby was delivered via c-section in October at just under 22 weeks gestation! She weighed under 10 ounces and was 9 1/2 inches long. She is now at 4 1/2 pounds and is going home in a few days with no major health issues! The article shows a picture of her at birth and now. It is amazing! It seems that everyday science is allowing younger and younger preemies to stand a chance when at one time there would have been none! http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,252878,00.html
I've heard this story. I was amazed and surprised when I heard it. I really hope this little girl doesn't have any long term mental or physical disabilities. I have actually known quite a few people to have very premature babies, some survived and are now healthy children and unfortunately, some didn't survive. But I thought a baby couldn't survive before 24 weeks gestations. That's what my doctor told me last year anyway.
I heard the story too and it gave me goose bumps. Amazing and such a miracle.
Preemie going home Wow, she was so little! That's amazing she survived!
I had not heard this story before and I have goosebumps all over after seeing her picture. What a little miracle she is! She was and still is so tiny!
Wow,totally amazing!!! It wouldn't have even been her birthday yet if she went full term.I remember when my boys were in NICU how tiny some of those little miracles were.I agree Adena, preemies didn't have much of a chance years ago especially this young. What a happy story
I saw this yesterday, it is just amazing to me to think about how far we have come medically. There is quite a bit in the med community I don't agree with and live by the philosophy that just because we can doesn't mean we should. but this is one of those reasons why we work so hard to learn. In 1968 my mother delivered twins at 32 weeks, it was considered a miscarriage because babies weren't viable that young out of the womb. We've come a long ways!
