Keep me in your thoughts tomorrow

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2007: Keep me in your thoughts tomorrow
By Boxzgrl on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 05:04 pm:

After 4 years of living in denial, i'm getting my wisdom teeth out. I'm scared. My stomach hurts just thinking about it.

By Vicki on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 05:28 pm:

I am not going to tell you that it will be a piece of cake, but I had all 4 out at the same time and I had no problems what so ever. So it is possible for that to be the outcome even with all the horror stories you might be hearing! Good luck!!

By Reds9298 on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 05:37 pm:

Ditto Vicki. Same experience here. I've never had natural childbirth, but let me tell that labor was worse than having my wisdom teeth out....by a mile!!! You'll be fine. Good luck!

By Yjja123 on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 06:11 pm:

I had mine of when I was 35. I dreaded it and put it off. It was no big deal. I had pain killers for the pain. The swelling was not that bad. The best thing I did was suck on ice chips for the swelling. You will be fine. The fear is worse than the procedure! I will have you in my thoughts.
(((hugs)))

By Enchens on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 06:49 pm:

I just got mine out less than a month ago. I was lucky. I got put to sleep and didn't feel a thing. I also got good meds, apparently. I got some Vicodin prescribed, but I really just needed the Motrin. I was scared to death, too, and I've given natural childbirth...twice! lol

Anyway, find out as much as you can before the procedure is done because you won't remember anything they tell you after the procedure. My dental surgeon had a handout typed out with all the instructions. If you lived a bit closer, I'd recommend him. He's in OC.

You are going to be fine.

By Nicki on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 07:32 pm:

I had mine out in my early 20's, and like Enchens, I was put to sleep. I was so surprised and relieved when I woke and it was over! Like you I had worried myself sick the day before. But, honestly it was no where near as bad as I feared. Will you have someone to watch the children when you return home? You might be drowsy from the pain meds. As I remember the pain was very, manageable. And just think how relieved you will be when it's over!!! I commend you for facing something you've been dreading. Let us know when you can how you are feeling, okay?
I will have you in my thoughts, tomorrow.

By Boxzgrl on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 07:50 pm:

I will be put to sleep as well. The fear of the unknown scares me the most. I will be SOOOOO relieved when this is over. It's been a burden on my shoulders for so long. DH will be home for the weekend to help out and i'm also having my mom spend the weekend here. I have a prescription of xanax to take before I go in. Hopefully that will calm my nerves.

By Sandysmom on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:00 pm:

((((hugs))))) sweetie, my DH had this done last year and he's so glad to have gotten it over with. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:11 pm:

I had mine out, when I was 23. I had IV sedation and all 4 pulled at once. My mouth did hurt for a while afterwards, but I never swelled up and I don't think I had the dry socket problem. I was glad I only had to go through it once.

By Nicki on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:23 pm:

I'm so glad to hear you are being put out, Melissa. And I understand the fear of the unknown. The xanax may help you tremendously! I used it shortly during a very stressful time, and it worked wonders for me. It will make you so wonderfully sleepy! By the time you get there, you will be ready to go to sleep.:-) I think it will help you so much. I don't remember much about my experience, which tells me it was not traumatic at all. I just remember the wonderful feeling of going to sleep, and the next thing I was awake and it was over.:-) I think you stay at the office and lay down for awhile in a quiet spot until you are more alert. Wear some easy to walk in shoes, no heels, lol. You will be groggy for awhile. I think they will put cotton in your mouth. That may feel strange when you awake, but as I remember, I was able to take most of it out once I was home. I am so glad you will have help. Just be sure whoever is with you gets any instructions about the meds and your aftercare, okay? Like Enchens said, you will be too out of it to remember. You will probably want to go straight to bed upon returning home. Let the pain meds work their magic and sleep. The ice chips are good advice, too. As I remember, the next day I was feeling pretty normal!
Deep breaths. It will be okay.
Thinking good thoughts for you!

Thoughts to you tomorrow....I had my 4 out when I was 18, and had no problem at all.

By Imamommyx4 on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 12:07 am:

It won't be as fun as going to Disney World. But I don't think it will be near as bad as you have worried it to be.

(((((hugs))))) and prayers be lifted up for your peace.

By Imamommyx4 on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 10:12 pm:

I know the first day or two is kind of tough. But I'm wanting to hear from you and how you're feeling.

By Boxzgrl on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 01:51 am:

I actually feel pretty good. I was under for only 20 minutes and they used iv sedation, not general anesthesia. I've slept for about 5 hours since being home so it's almost 11pm and i'm wide awake. I'm a bit uncomfortable but not really in pain. The biggest annoyance is the gauze in my mouth, but i'll be taking it out right before bed. I just can't wait for a regular meal.

All in all, the waiting around for the appointment was much more nerve wracking than anything. I'm just glad that I never have to worry about this again. :)

By Nicki on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 04:41 am:

Melissa, I'm so glad you checked in, and glad to hear you are doing pretty good. And, I can imagine how hungry you must be! If you're like me, you probably were too nervous to have much of an appetite yesterday. I hope you will be able to eat a normal meal soon.

And I agree, waiting for the appointment is pure torture! So glad you have this behind you. Hopefully you can get back to sleep tonight. Yeah! You did it. It's over!!:-)

By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 07:32 am:

So glad things went well and you aren't in much pain. Be sure to follow the instructions you were given for after-care, until your gums heal thoroughly. I did have dry-socket once, and it is really no fun, so after-care is important.

By Dana on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 08:59 am:

I had mine out in my 20's and it was nothing that some tylenol couldn't handle. Waking up was a bit uncomfortable because you are disoriented, but that doesn't last long.

By Imamommyx4 on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 06:14 pm:

I am so happy that your fears were not realized and it went well. Usually when I worry something up real good, it is never that bad.

I'm glad you checked in. I was worried about you.

By Conni on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:43 pm:

Just checking on ya...How are you doing now?

By Boxzgrl on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:57 pm:

Well, i'm good. The rest of the family not so much. DH and DD have the stomach bug (or something!) and have been vomiting all day nonstop. Talk about perfect timing, huh? THANK GOD my mom is here right now! I can handle it for the most part but need a nap after everytime I take my vicodin, so every 6 hours or so. DH is being a big baby about it. Surprise, surprise. I just got 4 teeth yanked out and he's been sleeping all day and whining over an upset stomach. Normally i'd baby him but considering the circumstances, I think I deserve a little slack here! LOL. Once again, my mom comes to the rescue. I don't know what i'd do if she weren't here.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:14 pm:

It's a good thing your mom can help! Sorry you have sickies at your house, in addition to recovering from surgery. I worked full-time, when I had mine done and I couldn't work afterwards, so I worked a night shift, had my teeth done and went home to sleep. Between just needing to sleep, the IV sedation and the Tylenol #3, I slept a total of 18 of the next 24 hours! LOL! It wasn't all in one stretch though. I would wake up, go to the bathroom, take another pain pill and go back to sleep. I never finished off that prescription of T3's, though.

By Insaneusmcwife on Monday, February 19, 2007 - 08:44 am:

{{{{hugs}}}} Sorry they arent feeling well. Good thing your mom is there to help. I'm very happy for you that you finally got your wisdom teeth out. Did you go to smile care on base? Thats where I went. They were awesome there. Hope you all start to feel better soon.
