Garage/Yard Sale Pricing

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: Garage/Yard Sale Pricing
By Missymelissy on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 10:41 am:

After going through all my mom's stuff, we decided there wasn't enough to warrant having an auction. So, I sold the bigger items to a used furniture place, I did sell a few other items individually, some things like her clothes went to a Thrift Store, and items that the family didn't want or mom hadn't said who they were to go to, we decided we could do a garage/yard sale. My cousin is having one the same day - we are doing ours together. We have also decided to do it Mothers Day weekend, fitting I think - in memory of my mom.

We have a large variety of items (too many to list). Anyways, my question to all of you is:

What prices (Canadian, if possible) would you either expect to pay for items or would you price items at?

TIA.

Hmmmm. well, if she had a lot of older items - antiques; I would get a book from the library and see if you can get an idea as to how much they are worth and price accordingly. Have a table just for antiques so people know that they are antiques. Also, if you didn't want to fool with all of that, and she does have a lot of antiques, you may want to call an antique store and see if they would come out and view the antiques and make an offer. That way, you are getting exactly what is appropriate for those items. As for the non-antiques, I would say for things like candy dishes and plates and glassware, I would keep those pretty low. I mean, I d have to see them to make a decision as to how much to price them. Can you take a few pics so that we have an idea? Also, If some of her glassware is older, it could be worth a good bit of money. You may want to hit a few antique shops and flea markets before you have your yard sale to see if you can get comparable prices. Good Luck.

Also, keep in mind that some people like to haggle and some people don't. But, be prepared for the hagglers who will ask 50 cents for a 5 dollar item. LOL! By the end of the day, you may never want to have another yard sale.
