What Kind of Shampoo Do You Use?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: What Kind of Shampoo Do You Use?
By Kate on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 02:05 pm:

Dare I admit this?? I use Suave, and have for years. I even use the extra cheap shampoo and conditioner in one!! I just can't stand spending money on stuff that gets used up so quickly. Between myself and my daughters we can go thru a bottle every other week. The Suave is fine for me but I'm curious as to what everyone else uses, and if you think they're that much better or different than the inexpensive brands.

By Cocoabutter on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 02:42 pm:

I used to use both the Suave shampoo and conditioner, but I switched conditioner to Sunsilk Hydra. It definitely makes my hair softer. It costs $3.29 a bottle, but I am the only one using it, so it lasts me a month or longer, and I find coupons for it, too.

By Tonya on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 02:45 pm:

We have 4-6 different types of shampoos and conditioners in our shower always. A bottle of the single kind cheap stuff then a bottle of the duel cheap stuff. Then we have a bottle of the expensive single stuff and the expensive duel stuff.

Rich and I have to switch each time we use stuff or our hair gets yucky.

By Yjja123 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 02:48 pm:

Aussie shampoo.
I use a lot but it keeps my curly hair tame.

By Kernkate on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:19 pm:

I was using Suave, but for Christmas, my Secret Santa Yvonne sent me shampoo and cond. from Bath and Body and it made my hair have so much volume and easy to manage so I went and bought more of it and love it! And it works on DD hair great to!
I can see a difference.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:22 pm:

VO5 or Suave. We go through it too fast, with 4 people, to buy more expensive shampoo.

By Jackie on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:28 pm:

Suave

By Jackie on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:28 pm:

Suave

By Yjja123 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:29 pm:

Kathy--My daughter loves the Bath & Body works shampoo that I sent you. Doesn't it smell great? :)

By Jewlz on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 03:45 pm:

pantene v is our new choice

By Debbie on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 04:02 pm:

I use Pantene.

By Tink on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 04:04 pm:

I've used Aussie for a long time but I recently switched our whole family over to Sunsilk for our different hair types. It's one brand that has a type that really works for mine and oldest dd's flat hair and aanother type for my dh's and youngest dd's "poofy" hair. My ds can use anything.

By Colette on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 04:06 pm:

I use Aveda or Aubrey Organics.

By Trina~moderator on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 04:10 pm:

Back to Basics or Paul Mitchell. My best friend happens to be a hairstylist, and she often gives us shampoo and conditioner or gets it for us at her cost.

By Sandysmom on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 04:50 pm:

I try different shampoos, but i mainly use Finesse. I can't remember the name of it, (Bio something) but i rarely buy it because it is expensive, but it works well. I think it is System Biolage. I love that.

By Sandysmom on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 04:52 pm:

Trina, i get an allergic reaction to paul mitchell. I get bumps all over my scalp. I like what it does to my hair, but I can't use it.

By Breann on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 06:13 pm:

I love Biolage hydrating shampoo for me.

Everyone else in the house uses Pantene.

By My2girlygirls on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 06:43 pm:

Paul Mitchell Super Skinny
Biolage Hydrating
Aveda
Paul Mitchell Tea Tree
Rusk
Nexxus
Can you tell I'm a cosmetologist that goes to the Beauty Supply place often??

By Unschoolmom on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 06:44 pm:

Dove

By Annie2 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 06:58 pm:

Tresemme here, lately. It comes in large bottles so lasts a bit longer.

By Hol on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 08:00 pm:

I almost always use Pantene. I have fine hair and it gives it body. I, too, hold a cosmetology license, so I could buy any of the professional shampoos at cost, but I haven't found one I like. I HATE the smell of anything Biolage. I have asthma and it makes me wheeze. Paul Mitchell leaves my hair limp. Back to Basics and Rusk are both too drying for me.

Just yesterday, I tried (now don't laugh) "Mane & Tail". It's HORSE shampoo, but you can buy it in smaller bottles in the Family Dollar Store. My sister has two horses, and it is all she uses on her hair. I had read about it,too, and decided to give it a try. It DID give my hair a lot of body without drying it out.

I also use the Sunsilk styling creme, the one in the yellow pump bottle. I LOVE it!! I have long hair and I only need three pumps. I work it through my hair upside down. It smells so good, and really does add a lot of body. I remember the Sunsilk products when I was in England in the 80"s. It is made by the same company that makes Suave.

By Imamommyx4 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 08:21 pm:

I used to use the Suave and something else that was very inexpensive but can't remember right now. Thought it was just fine. Then the lady who cuts my hair gave me a sample of something and told me to use it every day for a week. She said Suave and the other cheap one had a lot of "detergent" in them for lack of a better word. The sample she gave me made my hair feel so nice. She said I didn't have to use that one but she offered some examples of stuff that I could buy cheaper at the store like Pantene and some others. Also you can buy some of the beauty shop brands at Sally's Beauty Supply for less, too. I switch up between Pantene and Fructis right now.

I also found that by using the more expensive brand, I used less product at a time. I would cover my hand with Suave and maybe a little more to get a good lather. But with the Pantene, a quarter size squirt will do. So it probably comes out in the wash if you pardon the expression. And I buy the big size, too b/c it is a little more economical over all.

By Hol on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 08:33 pm:

Debbie - Was the other one White Rain? That is a cheap one, too.

When I was a teenager (40+ years ago), I used to use Prell. I LOVED the smell of it, and it gave my hair a lot of body. I tried years later to use it, and it was like a wool sweater washed in hot water! LOL! It shrunk my hair up in this big tangled mess. I later learned that it has industrial strength detergent that can literally take the wax off your floor! We didn't have much to choose from back then (only a few brands), so I guess we didn't know any better. :)

By Mrsheidi on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 08:51 pm:

Biolage :)

By Reds9298 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 09:08 pm:

Used Biolage for years but have been using Nioxin (also salon brand) for about 2 yrs. now and it's the best thing I've ever put on my hair! I have very thick hair that tends to get frizzy and the Nioxin keeps me under control.

I think there's a huge difference between salon products store products. Huge. It's expensive but the difference in my hair is significant. I don't think I've used store brand since high school.

By Luvn29 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 09:31 pm:

I used to use Pantene all the time. My daughter and I have very fine, limp hair. Then I tried the Sunsilk in the orange bottles for fine hair and LOVE it! I tried Dove, and didn't like it. I felt like it didn't keep my hair clean for very long. I have to wash my hair everyday because it gets oily. With the dove, it didn't feel as clean that evening...

My sister and I laugh because growing up, we never got to use anything but the cheapest, and now we both buy nice shampoos! Just because we can! LOL! And we have found that we just have to use a teensy bit, so it lasts us a really long time.

By Imamommyx4 on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 11:35 pm:

White Rain--that was it. I used the pink one. I could see the bottle but couldn't see the name.

I will still use a cheap, clear one every once in a while when my hair feels like it has a build up.

By Cat on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 11:44 pm:

I like Pantene, but I just get the Member's Mark from Sam's Club. They're out of conditions though right now, so I have the Wal-Mart brand of Pantene equivalent. The one thing I don't like about Pantene is that it tends to weigh my hair down. I don't mind getting cheap shampoo and conditioner. I have other things to spend the big bucks on. :)

By Unschoolmom on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 07:22 am:

Hol - Oh heck, I used to just use dishwashing liquid when I forgot to pick up shampoo and still do when I really want to strip out all the buildup of product.

All you really need to clean your hair is a soap that will break down the oils that allow dirt to cling to your hairshaft. Shampoo, horse shampoo, hand soap or dish detergent, doesn't matter they'll all work. If you're using a nice conditioner (which absurdly, puts a coat of wax or something similar right back on the hairshaft) then what shampoo you use doesn't matter a whit.

It's mostly a matter of what scent you prefer.

By Kateg on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 07:35 am:

Sunsilk here - I've tried so many different ones and am now sold on Sunsilk - the green bottle. It leaves my hair silky smooth and manageable.

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 08:33 am:

Usually I get Pantene

Right now im using the Dove shampoo and conditioner because i had a coupon for it.

when that's empty i'm going to get Garnier Fructise because dh just told me that that was his favorite (for his hair) so far. He says it gave him "volume" LOL it's funny because he barely has any hair.

I SO WISH I could afford to use the Aveda shampoo and conditioner. The girl that does my hair washes it with the Aveda Rose Mint (i think that's what it's called) it smells SO good and my hair is so so soft when she is done with it. But it's like $25 for a bottle!

By Ilovetom on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 08:59 am:

Hello my name is IloveTom and I am a shampoo snob.

I used to think I could only use Nexxus or Paul Mitchell.

Then I used some Herbal Essence Body Envy.

My hair has never looked better and I switch it with another kind every once in awhile.

By Conni on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 11:09 am:

Pureology products when I was in the USA. I really miss it! If you havent tried it I recommend it.

Now I use Pantene... atleast they have that here. :)

By Conni on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 11:11 am:

BTW- I should add that the pureology products are expensive... BUT they last a long time.

By Truestori on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 12:40 pm:

Conni,
My mom gave me Pureology products and my hair feels nice after I use them. I am allergic to pantene, dove and a few others so my vote is for Pureology, too!

By Sunny on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 12:59 pm:

I should take notes. I have thick, wavy hair that never wants to do what I want it to do! I recently got it cut, but it's not short enough. It's still prone to dryness and gets frizzy and unmanageable. :(

I used to switch back and forth between Finesse and Pantene, but the Pantene dries my hair and the Finesse doesn't seem to work as well as before. I recently bought Garnier Fructis and will see how that works. I still buy the cheap Suave for DH and the kids because they don't want to use my shampoo "and smell like a girl".

By Jjb on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 01:09 pm:

I use Pureology products too. I love them! They are expensive but you use so little so a bottle lasts for a long time. They keep my colored hair from turning orange from the sun and help my dry scalp.

By Enchens on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 01:44 pm:

I started with Suave in college. Loved their camomile conditioner. Then I switched to Herbal Essences. Loved it. Now I use Dove. Had a sample and then coupon. It just really tames my hair, and I have POOF hair! I buy it at Costco, or Target if it's on sale and I have a coupon. I use Infusium leave in conditioner in between hair washings.

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 04:37 pm:

I love tom....I'm a shampoo snob, too!!!

By Bea on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 - 06:42 pm:

I use Suave Shampoo. My hair is so easy.
