Health concern(personal) Is it normal?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: Health concern(personal) Is it normal?

I'm going anon becasue this is a sensitive issue for me. For the last few months I have had weird things going on, like I'm 6 weeks pg or something when I am defnintely not. Nausea, breast tenderness, recurrent yeast infections. I have mentioned this to my gyno and regular dr who tell me this is no big deal, hormones flucuate all the time. Now my breasts are a full size larger ( 38c- 40 d) I haven't gained a pound but I have been exercising since mid November and haven't lost any either. I had full blood work done in the summer and everything was fine. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Is it really just hormones I need to deal with? I have been on the pill for 3.5 years. I tend to be a hypochondriac, but this breast enlargement has me through a loop. Thanks.

Are your doctors men? No big deal, my left foot. Male doctors tend to discount female concerns quite readily (althugh I am fortunate enough to have a very sensitive male OBGYN.) They are probably just reacting to you this way because they know you may be hypocondriac, as you admit. The first thing I would do is seek out a female doc and get another opinion.

And it doesn't seem to me that hormones should be fluctuating to that extent when the main reason some women go on the pill is to regulate hormone levels.

Both female docs. Actually, I had mentioned the recurrent infections to 3 different docs but since they tested me for diabetes they are not concerned. It happens right before my period. I also mentioned perspiring(sp) quite a bit- it affects what I wear, sometimes i have perspiration stains on my clothing 10 minutes after getting dressed. I recently mentioned this to my regular doc, who told me some people she has prescribed antiperspirants to have broken out in bad rashes so she didn't do this anymore. I could just cry. I have cried. It's like no one is listening to me. My breasts being bigger is a new development. My insurance sucks which doesn't help. Thanks for letting me vent some more.

Menopause?

By Amecmom on Friday, January 5, 2007 - 05:35 pm:

Have you been on antibotics recently? I have had similar issues all of a sudden, and the only thing I can think of that was different is that I was on a course of Augmentin for 10 days.
Hope you get it figured out. Hugs
Ame

Thyroid?

By Anonymous on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 12:02 am:

My thyroid was checked with the blood work and it was fine and I'm only 28 so i don't think menopause. It reminds me of the way I felt when on the depoprovera shot years ago. I hate feeling like I'm getting the brush off, but with it being different drs. it makes me feel like I'm overreacting. I am so frustrated. It seems to be getting worse whatever it is.

A pituitary tumour? (Almost always benign). That can affect the ovaries which in turn could cause all those symptoms. I would make an appointment to see an endocrinologist (a doctor who treats glandular issues). If you have a teaching hospital or university medical school near you, try to get an appointment there.

Don't ever let ANYONE brush you off or dismiss you because they think you are a hypochrondriac. YOU are the one who lives inside your body. You know it better than anyone else, so you know what is "normal" and what isn't. I know that health insurance can be a pain (accountants make health decisions for patients instead of doctors), however, INSIST. Make noise. Fight to get the proper care. Keep us informed.

I was thinking pituitary tumor as well. An endocrinologist can test you for that and a host of other things, that's who I'd go see.

Thanks alot. I never thought of an endochrinologist.

Anon, an endo will do extensive hormone level tests, including estrogen, testosterone, growth hormones, as well as check pituitary & thyroid glands, glucose levels, basically all the *inner workings* of your system.

I saw one maybe 5 or 6 years ago, and finally got a diagnosis of an IGF-1 deficiency, which explains some of the health problems I have. They are also very knowledgeable in treating diabetes, etc.

If I were you, I'd maybe look into seeing an endo. I think I'm going to go back to the one I saw for the diabetes issue. Good luck!

I would also suggest an endocrinologist. I've posted before about my boobs getting bigger. I go see my GYN in a few weeks for my annual visit and I'm gonna talk with her about it too. Although I like the size they are, it worries me a little too that they are growing and I am 39.
