Will it ever end!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: Will it ever end!
By Heaventree on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:18 pm:

Ugh, first antibiotics to prevent infection, then a yeast infection from the anitbiotics, then aunt flo. NOW A UTI!!!! Guess what that means, more anitbiotics!

I just got home from the grocery store, thank goodness they had a washroom, I had to run to the bathroom 4 times. I have a doctor's appointment on Friday, but it's a 40 min. - 1 hour drive depending on traffic, I have no idea how I'm going to get there.

I have a full bottle of Amoxicillin Trihydrate sitting in front of me, I'm so tempted to start now, but my doctor would not be pleased. So I'll wait and drink cranberry juice in the meantime.

Thanks for letting me whine.

By Vicki on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:33 pm:

Oh boy, you could really be miserable by Friday!! Do you have a walk in place closer to you?

By Luvn29 on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:40 pm:

OH wow, Heaventree, I sure hope that you feel better! It sounds miserable!

By Tink on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:45 pm:

If you call tomorrow morning, will your doctor authorize you to start the Amoxicillin before seeing you on Friday? That 24 hours can spell a lot of relief for you and your bladder.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

By Marcia on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:53 pm:

I could never wait that long to see the doc for a UTI. You could always go to a walk in clinic and get meds right away. I can feel your pain!!
Amoxicillin wouldn't typically be the drug of choice for a UTI, so you might not do yourself any good. They would normally give you a sulfa based drug, or macrobid.
Feel better!!

By Heaventree on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:09 pm:

Oh Marcia, I wish I could take suflas but I'm allergic. They do presribe amoxicillin for UTIs but it depends what kind you have and I'm no doctor that's why I don't want to chance it. Also I want to talk to my doctor first about the yeast infection and if some antibiotics are worse then others. No way do I want a repeat yeast infection.

As we just moved here a few months ago I have no idea where a walk-in might be, but I'm about to start looking.

By Marcia on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:18 pm:

I'm also allergic to sulfa, and penicillin, so have to take macrobid for UTI's.
For the yeast, take some garlic and acidophilus. The garlic will kill the yeast, and the acidophilus will replace the good bacteria that all of the antibiotics have killed with the bad.

By Mom2three1968 on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:27 pm:

I have recurrent uti's and they are no picnic!!Can you go to the drug store and get some over the counter pain meds specificially for uti's? I know the make an over the counter version of peridian, I think that is what it's called. Gosh, I just got over one so be careful and get to the doc as soon as you can!!

By Heaventree on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:31 pm:

The only clinic I could find open this late does not answer the phone, there is no way I can drive myself there and back and get a prescription, I'll pee my pants!

OOOOOHHHHH this sucks! Why don't guys have to deal with this kind of stuff.

I'm taking the Amox. It was prescribed for a sore throat that never developed into an infection. I can't even go to the clinic tomorrow, I can't be away from the bathroom for more than 5 mins and I'm still healing from my surgery so taking two small children is out of the question. I don't have any garlic or acidophilus in the house. Guess it's Cranberry and Vodka along with the penicillin. :)

DH will just have to drive me on Friday. He's thrilled as you can imagine, he just started back to work today and already has to take a 1/2 day off. Maybe he'll trade me for the UTI.

By Heaventree on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:34 pm:

Mom2three1968, we were posting at the same time.

I don't have pain, just a strong urge to pee, when I pee I feel a strange contraction and I get cold all over and nauseous. It's such a gross feeling. There are also little flecks of something in my urine, some yellow some red. Weird, I haven't had a UTI for 15 years.

By Wandilu on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 10:23 pm:

Are you serious about the vodka? That will make it worse.Essence of peppermint is very good for bladder infections,so i bet it would help the UTI also. You should get you DR to prescribe another antibiotic to go along with the others. It's called Nystatin, and it will clear up the yeast infection that comes from taking the other antibiotics. You can take them at the same time.A really good book to read that has more info concerning this is called The Yeast Connection. A GREAT book. Hope you get to felling better :)

By Heaventree on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 10:27 pm:

Wandilu, I was joking about the Vodka, kind of sort of. :) I love Cosmos.

No Vodka tonight, just drugs. I hope this isn't a recurring thing, the yeast infection and aunt flo left yesterday. I just have the UTI now, but man oh man one thing right after the other. I will talk to both the surgeon and my FP about the antibiotics so I know next time what not to take if that's even possible. Fore warned is fore armed.

By Kateg on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 10:31 pm:

Oh, I feel for you. I was away from home to a family wedding when mine hit earlier this summer. It was soooo horrible. I lived in the bathroom. I got an OTC meds at a Walgreens for the urge / pain and I was taking them. Religiously. It was at the worst at the wedding. Every five minutes - excuse me, excuse me...I finally got some meds, but the UTI had taken hold and it just minimized the symptoms.

To top it all off, our DS was horribly ill at the same time. When he wasn't in the bathroom, I was. It was the worst trip of our life and sooo far from home.

You are in my thoughts...hang in there.

By Hol on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 11:03 pm:

There is a GREAT over the counter med called pyridium. Kelly was right. The brand name is Azo. We used to sell a LOT of it at the pharmacy. They are little red tablets. It is an anesthetic for the urinary tract, and has a mild antibiotic action. It is SUCH relief. The only drawback (and who the heck cares when you are hurting) is that it turns your urine a bright orange/red colour, and can stain your underwear, so wear a panty liner. We always warned patients about it because we didn't want them to think that they were peeing blood! You aren't supposed to take it for more than three days, but by then you'll be at the Dr. Sometimes doctors would prescribe it along WITH the antibiotic, but it IS OTC.

Also, drink a lot of water. It helps flush you out. I can't take sulfa drugs, either. I am highly allergic to them.

After you get better, take some precautionary steps to avoid another one. Always "wipe" front to back, and urinate before and AFTER intercourse. My GYN told me that females are much more prone to UTI's because we have a shorter urethra, so bacteria can get in there easier. Having relations can irritate the urethra, too, and so urinating before and after helps flush out any bacteria that may have been introduced.

Maybe you could wear a double pad for the ride to the Dr, so if you tinkle, no big deal. Bring a spare set of undies, too.

Feel better!

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 11:04 pm:

OMGosh! You poor thing. :( I would say definitely drink the cranberry juice, but, wow, you have been hit hard. (((((hugs))))) to you sweetie, and let us know how you are feeling tomorrow.

By Christylee on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 11:15 pm:

I'm right there with you! This is my first one ever and I feel for those who get them alot. I'm drinking TONS of water, even choking down cranberry juice, and taking the AZO. So far the urge has gone down a little but still hurts when I go (the contraction type feeling) and my urine is the bright red/orange (glad I read the box or I'd been freaking).

(((feel better))) I know how it feels.

By Andi on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 11:15 pm:

Another for Cranberry Juice...Hope you feel better soon.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 11:17 pm:

Yikes! I would never be able to wait that long to go to the doctor, for a UTI! Of course, the walk-in, where I work, is right across the street, and there are 2 emergency rooms within minutes of my house.

The last one I had started on a Saturday and I had to work on Sunday, and I had the receptionist book me in, and I sent my urine to the lab, that day. I could barely stand it, because it hurt so bad. Good luck!

By Imamommyx4 on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 07:44 pm:

I wish I'd seen this sooner. At the very least you could have gotten some phenazopyridine (AzoStandard) OTC. It comes in a 98 mg tab and you can take 2 every 8 hours. It relieves the pain and urgency. DOES NOT get rid of the infection, just makes you less miserable until the antibiotics take effect. Also turns your urine bright yellow to orange.

By Heaventree on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 08:33 pm:

Thanks so much everyone! I took one dose of the Amox. last night and already feel better. It's still there but not as bad. DH wanted me to keep taking the Amox. but I want to see my doctor first. Looks like Cameron has the start of an eye infection so we are all off to the doctor tomorrow.

Forgot to mention, both Cameron and I have some sort of GI virus (Chucky Cheese no doubt) that might be what caused the UTI for me anyway.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 10:14 pm:

Oh ugh. There has been a stomach thing making the rounds here in sheboygan, WI. Ugh.

By Hol on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 10:51 pm:

I remember having a UTI once and standing on the side of the road watching my DH march in a parade when he was in the military. I had that awful urge to go, and the dull ache in my lower abdomen. There was no place to "go". There are some things you never forget, and that was one of them. :)

Let us know how you and Cameron make out.

By Heaventree on Friday, January 5, 2007 - 01:50 pm:

Well, I went to the doctor this morning. First I went to see my surgeon and I asked about one antibiotic versus another with regard to yeast infections and he said they are all the same. Yeah, even I with my limited knowledge know that's not true! Ok so he's young and a surgeon so I'll forgive him. :)

Then off to the FP, he said not all antibiotics are created equal some have more of a tendency to cause yeast infections than others, so I asked why he thought the surgeon prescribed one that might cause a yeast infection and he went into a long explanation about different types of infections and bacteria which I find fascinating but I'm sure you're not interested in.

So I peed in the bottle, no bacteria, but still have symptoms. He checked me out and there is absolutely no sign of a yeast infection didn't even squab me. We think that the itchies may have been due to my autoimmune disease which can cause skin irritation anywhere there is hair which is virtually every where.

So he sent my urine sample off the lab and sent me home with a prescription for Phenazopyridine or the AZO that some of you mentioned and yes my pee is bright yellow. It's not helping, but I'm still better than I was on Wednesday. I bet I had an infection and the Amox. cleared it up enough so they didn't see it with the strip test. Anyway he will call a prescription in for me next week if the lab results come back positive. Can you believe I have to wait until Tuesday!

On a side note Cameron is fine, I didn't even bring him in to see the doctor, I think his eye was red from rubbing it; his hair was in his eyes so I cut his bangs.

I have no idea how I'm going to deliver my Avon catalogues this weekend, maybe I should have bought some Depends. LOL

By Imamommyx4 on Friday, January 5, 2007 - 10:23 pm:

Hate to tell you this, but the amoxicillin you took could have given them a false neg. What happens in my simple minded way of thinking is that one or two doses of an antibiotic can kill the live bacteria that are susceptible to the antibiotic and show up on the strip test. The "baby" bacteria are in a sort of shell. They aren't touched by the antibiotic yet and don't show on the urinalysis strip test. Did you tell your dr that you'd taken a dose of antibiotic? I did that once and told the dr. She put me on antibiotics anyway b/c she said there wasn't any good way to tell for sure since I'd started therapy on my own. I got fussed at. I know how bad a UTI hurts. I know the hoopla about overusing antibiotics and the developing resistances. Waiting until Tuesday isn't acceptable to me. Drink plenty of water and cranberry juice and take the Phenazopyridine every 8 hours. If that doesn't help, he could call you in a prescription for some other med like Urispas for the pain and urgency. And please don't think that I am condoning drinking or bashing it either way. But we had an old country doctor in my hometown that recommended ONE can of beer a day for people with chronic UTI's. I got into a rut several years back and was on repeated rounds of antibiotics. finally added the can of beer a day for 2 weeks (I don't like beer) and it finally nipped it. But doing that also depends on your health, your ability to drink any alcoholic beverage, allergies, etc. So take that info with a grain of salt.

By Heaventree on Friday, January 5, 2007 - 11:25 pm:

Thanks for the info, I did tell him I took a dose, he didn't say anything but seem to discard it as unimportant. I was so fed up this afternoon and this evening and so terribly uncomfortable that I took another does of the Amox. and will finish the bottle. I figure it can't hurt and there is no way I will make it to Tuesday. The AZO did nothing so far after two doses except to make my pee orange.

I feel better already just like I did after taking the first dose of Amox. We have a dinner party tomorrow here and a full house planned, there is no way I can cook dinner, entertain and chase two small children with an infection which is exactly what I believe I have despite what my doctor thinks.

If all else fails I'll drink some beer. :)

By Hol on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 01:34 am:

I'm so sorry. That is so frustrating. I thought the same thing...that the amoxicillin could have masked the infection. However, you had to do SOMETHING, and it isn't a coincidence that when you take the antibiotic, you feel better.

Why didn't the doctor swab you? That would have shown him pus (or any other kind of infection) if he had put it under the microscope. I hate the way doctors can be so dismissive of women's complaints. I once went to a GYN that came highly recommended. I waited two hours to see him, and he gave me twenty minutes for a first (and last) visit. I had something I was concerned about (don't remember what it was, now), and he said to me, "Where did you read that? Woman's Day?" What an ignorant bas****! I never went back.

By Imamommyx4 on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 10:17 am:

Personally, if I had the antibiotic and felt better after taking 1 dose, I would have continued. As a medical professional that might be considered unethical advice given your doctor's advice and the stuff about resistance and taking meds if they aren't necessary. But as a woman who has BTDT, I'd take them. But since you have started taking them, take them correctly as ordered on the bottle. Don't hit or miss on it. That really will do you no good but prolong the infection. And when I did the beer, I drank 1 can or bottle a couple hours before bedtime. DH would laugh at me b/c I'd make such faces. I prefer sweet wines if I'm gonna drink anything and beer doesn't fit that sweet category at all. But beer actually has some natural properties that aid in clearing up a UTI. Not taken alone but as an aid.

I so feel for you. Hope you feel better.

By Karen~admin on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 10:52 am:

Generally, if you take a dose or two of an antibiotic, it will affect the bacteria that are present and you can get a false negative on a test. And when taking an antibiotic, you should take the entire course, not just 1 or 2 or 3 doses, because when you do that, it helps the bacteria become resistant to that particular antibiotic. That is why so many people with, say, respiratory infections relapse - they take the antibiotic until they start feeling better and then stop. Problem is, the bacteria is not totally knocked out, so it's had a taste of the antibiotic, and when you take it again, it's built up a resistance to the med and it doesn't work - or work as well.

By Heaventree on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 11:08 am:

Ya, I plan on finishing the bottle, I've had my second dose and I'm much, much better. I was desperate the other day and thought the same about the false positive, although the doctor was not convinced about that as he seemed willing to let me wait until Tuesday. I was really feeling much better by the time I went in to see him. His thoughts were if you have an infection it's constant, meaning you have the urge to pee all day and all night. I wasn't getting up at night, but my thought was that I had taken the antibiotic before bed so it had helped. I think that if I had not taken another dose last night I would not have slept at all. Anyway it seems to be working so I'll take the full dosage 3 times a day until the bottle is empty.

I need to find a doctor in the city I live in, traveling 30 mins - an hour is not a good option, but I'll miss my doc he delivered my babies and knows our family dynamic.

Thanks for all the help ladies!

By Pamt on Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 11:33 am:

Hope you are totally well soon!
