Another injured child!
Today the school nurse called and told me I needed to come to the school because Ashton was injured. His class was outside playing and one of his friends started tugging on him, and he fell, and that boy, who is quite a bit bigger, fell on top of him. I took him to the ER at the advice of his pediatrician, and the school nurse, because he was having so much pain in his shoulder, and there was a large swollen lump, and it turns out he BROKE HIS COLLARBONE! Totally snapped it in two. It looked as if someone had broken a twig in two on the X-ray. So he is in a sling for at least 4-6 weeks, cannot participate in Phys. Ed. for 45 days, and has to see a bone specialist next week to see that it is going to heal correctly without anything further. He has been in so much pain today. I feel so helpless. The pain meds are starting to work now, and he said he is feeling so relaxed now that he doesn't want to move. I told him that is exactly what we want!
That sucks Never a dull moment ugh.((HUGS))
Oh no! I'm so sorry Adena, poor boy. I hope everything heals well and that he is feeling better soon.
Oh NO!!! So sorry for Ashton. (((hugs)))
Hugs, Adena. I hope he can rest. Prayers that it will heal just fine without more intervention. Ame
Thanks so much, guys. He just fell asleep... I just hope he is able to rest without it bothering him too much... I definitely appreciate the prayers so much... and the hugs.
Poor little guy! Robin broke his collar bone when he was three. We didn't realize it until the next day when he woke up and I picked him up out of bed by his arms. He SCREAMED bloody murder! His didn't snap all the way, but bent and cracked. He wore a figure 8 sling for about 4 weeks. We put a t-shirt under it so it wouldn't get so funky from touching his skin. It healed just fine, though. I hope Ashton is feeling better soon. Hugs to you both.
Oh no, poor kiddo!
I will keep Ashton in my prayers. I'm so glad the pain meds are helping! I hope he is able to sleep through the night. Hugs for you, too Adena.
Oh Adena. I got just that phone call and just that diagnosis when Greg was in 6th grade. And yes, it is extremely painful. The ER put Greg in a figure 8 brace to hold his collar bone in position while the bone healed. It was really uncomfortable for him because it was a heavy nylon thing, it was summer, and he was at that time pudgy. We had to try all kinds of things to pad his armpits so they didn't get torn up. One good thing came out of it - he had terrible posture before it happened, and after 6-8 weeks with the figure 8 brace, he came out of it with good posture and has had good posture ever since. It is sure not going to be much fun for Ashton, especially heading into the holiday season. He has my sympathy - as do you, because you will be dealing with him and doing most of the worrying. Definitely the bone specialist - you do want it to heal cleanly and properly aligned.
OUCH!! I hope the pain stops soon! Poor guy!
Thanks so much, guys. I have to call for his appt. in a few minutes. I'm going to ask if they have any suggestions to keep the sling from moving so much. It's a little big, but the only one smaller was a Barney sling, and he just freaked out when he thought he was going to have to wear that! I don't blame him. He is a little old for that, poor thing! He slept very well last night. He woke up a couple of times, and I had to help him readjust. Once his neck area was swollen from the way he laid for awhile, so I fixed him on his pillow, and he felt a lot of relief and slept the rest of the night. I, on the other hand, did not sleep AT ALL! I was awake at least every 20-30 minutes till 5:00 a.m. because I was so worried about him needing me. Boy, I'm tired this morning! Last year Santa got him a small child's plush recliner. Boy, that is working out perfectly right now! I moved it in here into the living room in front of the television so he doesn't have to turn his head at all. He's watching a movie with daddy since he is off today.
Just wondering how Ashton is doing. I hope you are both able to get some good sleep tonight.:-)
Awww, thanks Nicki! He is doing so much better than we expected. He woke up last night a couple of times, and I got him settled back in. Poor thing woke up early a.m. and went to the bathroom, and then came in my room and told me he couldn't get his underwear down far enough. He's doing okay in the day, but I think it was from being groggy and stuff. I slept so much better last night. I feel so much more rested today, thank goodness! Maybe I will feel human again. Yesterday I just couldn't get motivated to do anything significant!
Prayers for a speedy recovery for Ashton. Glad to hear you got some well needed rest.
So glad he's doing better! A good nights rest makes such a difference, doesn't it? Hope you are having a good day. Does the tree go up today? That might cheer up Ashton! It's raining here and I'm actually getting more in the holiday spirit.:-) Dh even has a fire going in the fireplace! Have a good day.
Yep! The living room is all decorated and he is excited because he got to do a special table decoration of a bunch of Christmas 101 Dalmation toys from McDonald's Happy Meals! We're definitely ready for Christmas!
How fun! I'm glad Ashton had a special project, too. It sounds adorable. I wonder if he'd let you share a picture of it?:-)
I'm sure of it. I'll try to find my digital camera tomorrow. I placed it somewhere one day so I'd know where it was. Every time I do that with something, I end up losing it! As soon as I find it, I'll post a picture. It is cute and he says he is going to do it every year now!
