Got my cast off.......
Monday the surgeon took the cast off my hand/arm. I was really looking forward to it because it was so uncomfortable, etc. I was so not prepared for what it would be like. My wrist is totally locked. I can't bend my hand or wrist at all, just my fingers a little - as much as I could bend them with the cast on. And the pain.......it hurts worse that it did before surgery. From being locked, I am told. It's still pretty swollen too. I start physical therapy tomorrow. Still have almost no use of that hand. I know I've whined a lot about it. At this point I'm pretty much freaking out about it. I NEED my hand to work, and I'm afraid it won't. Wish me luck with therapy.
Thats terrible after going through all that. I hope that it gets better soon. Therapy should help or they will at least be able to tell you when you can expect to get better. ((HUGS))
Good luck Karen. PT is hard, I hated it and it hurt like heck! I tore my knee skiing and had to wear a cast from my hip to my ankle for months. I lost 2 inches of muscle on my leg and could not walk after the cast was removed. I was on crutches for awhile once I had the cast removed. Anyway all this to say that it was hard at first and it hurt a lot but it did get better. Hang in there.
You are going to bounce right back, I just know it. You have such determination and you will fight this. Physical therapy will do wonders for your hand. So glad you finally got the cast off. I will be thinking about you...get better fast.
When Chrissy got her cast off of her leg after having a break just below the knee, I could tell she was in much more pain. It just took a short while for her to feel better, without the cast to stabilize her. You're going to be much better in no time!!!
Oh Karen. That simply sucks. But, I do remember, when I broke my arm as a child, the PT after the cast came off was not comfortable, but necessary because my arm was in the bent position and needed to be stretched.
(((Karen))) Doesn't sound fun at all. I hope PT helps and recovery goes well.
{{{Karen}}} Oh gosh, that doesn't sound good. I hope the pt works quickly, and you are good as new real soon.
{{{{{Karen}}}}} Sorry you're still dealing with this. My hand is still lumpy on the back and twinges every now and then (especially when I bend it back and put weight on it), but it sounds like I got off easy! More hugs...
Sorry it is still hurting. Just wondering why on earth you are seeing a PT instead of an OT? I would see about not only doing therapy with an OT, but one who specializes in hand therapy. Hope your recovery improves.
OT is not covered by my ins., Pam, I am seeing a hand therapist for PT.
Well, poo! I figured it was your doctor's fault. Hope you get more movement and less pain soon.
Hope it feels better soon!!!
I hope it's feeling better soon and that the PT makes a huge improvement. {{{Karen}}}
I'm counting on it helping in a huge way. I am going to the same therapists Jen went to after her hand surgeries. Hers was a whole different game, I guess it was more serious, being that she had a plate in the bone? And again after it was removed. But with mine, it's a tendon and a ligament, so I guess that is partly why my hand won't bend. Anyway, I just hope this helps a lot. Part of the therapy will be a parafin spa, and I own one at home, so I'm going to Sally's today after work to get new wax for it. The Rx says range of motion exercises, ultrasound, deep heat, massage & parafin. I go @ 7:30 in the morning and will go 3X weekly for 4 weeks, then see the doctor again. I am thinking I won't be able to zipline next month though. :-(
{{{{Karen}}}} hope you get your motion back quickly.
(((Karen))) I hope it heals quickly!
Good luck, Karen!
Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Don't get discouraged. You'll have full use of your hand again before you know it. Physical therapy works wonders. ((HUGS))
Thanks! I went to therapy Thurs. morning. I have exercises to do several times daily and I am getting movement back! WOO HOO! Still have pain, but that's to be expected. But there's a light at the end of the tunnel. I know it will take time, but I feel positive now, and that's a great feeling!! :-) I will go 3X/weekly for a few weeks and then see the hand doc again.
Are you taking anything for the pain? Hope it goes well and your recovery is smooth and successful, Karen! Can you still eat ice cream with the other hand? ha ha ha...{{{{HUGS}}}} You'll be better in no time!!
So glad that things are finally looking up for you.I was in therapy for a year for tendonitis and it was a struggle.Hang in there it does get better ((HUGS))
Sherri, I had 6 months of prolo therapy on my elbows a few years back for tendonitis. Heidi, I'm on long term pain meds anyway for my back and spinal issues. I'll be OK, I know that now. I can deal with the pain from the therapy. I just want my hand back. :-) :-) :-)
I really hope all goes well, Karen. I'll be thinking of you. Ame
I shouldn't have needed physio as long as I did but the idiot doctor put the steriod shot in the wrong spot, so I lost alot of the muscle and had to work it back.I was doing lousy with my wrist and my DH had just had back surgery. He put my deoderant on for me and I pulled up his socks. We were quite the pair LOL
