How to store cooked ham?
How do you keep it in the fridge? I was buying one quite often because it's so convienent for lunches but it always gets slimmy in the fridge and after only a week smells funny. DH bought one last week and the expiration date is Dec. 9, I know it will never last this long in my fridge. I've tried putting it in a Zip lock sealing it and leaving it unsealed and I've tried plastic wrap but nothing works. My mom told me not to wrap meat in tin foil as it causes a chemical reaction and meat spoils much quicker when wrapped in tin foil so that's out. I thought maybe I should just cut it up in small portions and freeze it. How do you store it?
I freeze it until I'm ready to use it.We usually have the leftovers for lunch and I will only use leftovers for 1 maybe 2 nights if its not used up then I throw it out.My DH doesn't mind leftovers but I usually cringe at it depending on what it is though.
I would leave some slices in the fridge for sandwiches and freeze the rest. It should be okay for a week when placed in a ziploc bag, then placed in the meat drawer. Freeze slices or ground it up to make ham salad. You can freeze the ground and when you want to use it, it defrosts very quickly. Add some mayo, pepper and a bit of horseradish or spicy mustard.
I put 3 days worth of slices in a plastic zip-loc type bag, using as many bags as I have ham, leaving a 3 days supply in the frig, put the other bags in a freezer bag and freeze. Take out one bag at a time and thaw in the frig. I've done this lots of times when I had teenage boys and sliced ham was on sale. I also freeze the packs of individually wrapped slices of cheese and they thaw nicely.
Thanks everyone, I'll try freezing it.
