80 year old b-day gift

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: 80 year old b-day gift
By My2girlygirls on Thursday, September 28, 2006 - 07:51 am:

This weekend is my MIL's 80th birthday and we are having a family dinner. My problem is that I haven't bought a gift yet and don't have a clue what to buy. She has everything she needs and most of what she wants. She has been a widow for 18 years so she is used to doing things on her own and if she needs something she just handles it. She just moved into a new condo but has more than enough stuff to fill it. She doesn't really need jewelry, we have bought her several pieces over the last couple of Christmases. We bought her a beautiful crystal vase last birthday. I am stumped. Does any one have any suggestions?

I remember having a discussion about gifts with a dear great aunt (may she rest in peace) who was in her 80s at the time. She said she appreciated practical gifts she could use, like postage stamps, stationary and gift certificates to her salon, grocery store, etc..

Maybe Gift Certificates for a favorite place she like to go or shop. Thats what I usually get. A basket with her favotite perfunes, soaps..

What about a quick, small scrapbook of her grandchildren or just a photo album with some pictures of the past?

I love the stationary idea. There is a great stationary shop locally and I know they would have some beautiful stuff. Keep the ideas coming... Maybe I could do a basket and fill it with stationary and a beautiful pen, what else?

On my gramma's 90th we hired a massage therapist to go to her apartment and give her a massage. She actually loved it.

Well, is she a sentimental lady? I love the idea of a scrapbook, although it's a little late to put one together now. But something special with pictures of the grandkids and family would be great. Maybe a picture of her late husband...

I agree with the picture idea. You could always buy a frame with lots of spaces, and fill it with pics of the kids, grandkids, etc.

Ok, I went two different ways with this. On the touchy feely sentimental side I got her a lovely appointment book and a beautiful box of notecards from a local stationary store. Then I went the practical route and bought her an under the counter CD/radio player. Since she moved into this condo she had to put her stereo into her bedroom and she loves to listen to music while doing her crosswords so the kitchen opens up into the livingroom, this way she can pop in a CD and listen while she does stuff in the kitchen or the livingroom. She rarely watches TV so this enables her to listen to her music which she absolutely loves... She tends to lean more to the practical side anyway so I'm sure she will appreciate both. I hope so...

I think that sounds perfect! I'm sure she'll love it and it sounds very thoughtful of you to find something that she can use so often.

I think that many older people would love new linens for bed or bath. It's something they hang on to long after they are worn to a frazzle. A nice set of towels and a face cloth in a shade that will look good in her bathroom or good sheets and pillowcases might be perfect.

Well, she loved both of the gifts. She loved the idea of the CD player and said that she really missed having the music in the living room. We had a great family dinner and had a wonderful time. She loves having the family together, makes me realize we should do it more often while we still have her and she's healthy... Thaks for the input!
