Mini-vacation ideas needed!
Dh and I have decided that we just need to get away from home. We have not had a vacation for a few years and just want to get away for a few days. We live in NE Ohio and want to go somewhere for 3 or 4 days, with the kids. They have Friday Oct 13th off school for a teachers day, so we want to take advantage of that! I am picturing us in a cabin in the woods overlooking a lake, but i'm not sure we can find that since we want to leave in a few weeks. Dh needs to go somewhere where there are things to do, he can never just sit and relax. He just is not built that way! We would like to drive to the destination. I am NOT flying in a plane on Friday the 13th! Especially since Sept. 11. Any ideas or suggestions? I have looked into the Aderondack Mountains, but there are so many different places to go there. I have no idea where to start!
OH! I would SO go to Mackinack Island, MI, but not sure exactly how far east you are in NE OH. When we lived in NW OH, I believe it took around 5 or 6 hours to get there, but I don't know for sure. Also, have you considered Niagra Falls? We can't wait to take the kids there. You can stay off away from things if you want, but there is still tons to do. Hmmm... there is also Hershey Pennsylvania, and the surrounding areas. There's an amusement park there, plus a lot of other things... You might consider Charlottesville, VA. It is in the beautiful mountains, and there is the Monticello, plus many other things to do... I'll think on this and let you know! sounds like so much fun!

Niagara Falls is the first thing that came to my mind! The drive up through Michigan is very peaceful, if you want to go to Mackinac Island. The speed limit on I-75 is 75mph, too!
Hocking Hills would be perfect, but you won't be able to find anything available, I'm afraid. October is one of their busiest seasons. If you ever get the chance though, it's gorgeous! DH and I have a favorite B&B, but no kids are allowed! Glenlaurel Inn Here's a website for Hocking Hills in general. There is a lodging link at the top. Lots of cabins, but again, I doubt you'll find one for that weekend. Hocking Hills Good luck. I so know that "we need to get away" feeling!
I agree with Hocking Hills. Dh and I got married in October and we went there for our 5th anniversary and it was so beautiful with the leaves changing etc. I also think they would be booked up. My next choice would be Niagra Falls. We went there for a few days for our honeymoon (dh only got a week off work and we had to move too) and it was nice that time of year too!!
Mackinac! Yes, that's how you spell it. I knew it had that --ack spelling at the end even though it's pronounced ---aw, but I thought the way I spelled it looked wrong!
I am sitting here giggling because i have thought of all those places! I guess i'm on the right track! I did think of Hocking Hills, it looks beautiful there. But , there is no way we would get a place this late. I did think of Niagara Falls. I guess when i think of that, i think of the last place we stayed there. We stayed right by Clifton Hill, which is totally busy and wacky. It was fun, but that's not what i am looking for for this getaway. I guess there are other things to do there though. I did think of Mackinac/Mackinaw too! I'm not sure what there is to do up there. I will have to look into it, it looks beautiful there! And Dawn, the 75 mph speed limit sounds nice. Don't tell my dh, he would think that's an invite to go 85! LOL I have not ruled anything out yet. Keep the ideas coming ladies! I knew i could count on you!
I am in Flat Rock MI which is about 30 miles north of Toledo and a drive to Mackinac will take at least 6 hours if you don't stop, there is construction going on on I-75 from Monroe to I think Taylor and it's a mess, and then again a couple hours farther north. We have a cabin in the woods in Atlanta MI and you're welcome to use it, however there isn't any electricity or water, hehehe!!! Try a google on Irish Hills or Jackson MI these are lovely rolling hills with golf couses and apple orchards and probably not booked, and are located off of US23. If you decide on MI the colors will be at their peak on the dates you are looking at.
Have you thougth about looking near the water near Indiana/Michigan borden. I forget what lake that is sorry. I bet htere are allot of cabins for rent all over in that area right now. I say look at the map pick a city and google it see where it gets you. Good luck.
LOL thanks for the offer, Mary. But i'd like electricity and running water I will check out Irish Hills and Jackson! Thanks
