Question about volleyball injury

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: Question about volleyball injury

My DD started volleyball this year in school and has been complaining about her hand. She said it's a burning sensation that runs from one of her fingers down to her wrist. I'm sure this is normal from serving the ball, but at what point is it not normal?

She is not hitting 100% correctly if it is hurting that way. Once she learns to hit on target it will not hurt that way anymore. It will hurt some but after a while will just become a normal feeling. I played volleyball for 6 yrs through JR high and High school competitively and it hurts but you just go with it if you want to play.

Burning sensation sounds like nerve impingement - if it continues hurting, I'd let a doctor check it out. I used to play on a league years ago and I never had pain.

I would talk to the gym teacher or coach about it, first. If your daughter hasn't complained to the teacher/coach, s/he may not know - and may have some suggestions. I'm with Karen, if it keeps up (or has been going on for 2 weeks or more), I would talk to the doc. It may be that she is not holding her hand correctly; she may need some sort of brace or protection; or she may actually have a problem. But it is worth checking out.
