Don't put your cellphone in the wash!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: Don't put your cellphone in the wash!

LOL! The other day, one of the kids had my cellphone, in their pockets, and when we stripped off our cowpoop-stained clothes, I didn't realize it was in the wash and ran the washing machine! We let it dry out, but it seemed like it was never going to turn on again. So, today, Gary and I went to the cellphone place and got the old cellphone set-up to work again. The wrecked phone, was a Kyocera flip-phone (the free one) and the old phone is not. The 17yo, who handed the phone to the 14yo, who then put it in her pocket, should have really given the phone to me, because I would have put it in my purse.

The 17yo is the one who is the most upset, that we are going from the cool flip-phone, back to the old one-piece phone (KX 414). Oh well. A new phone (KX9 Milan Kyocera) would be about $180 to replace. Well, not going to happen, most likely, since we are only 10 months into a 24-month contract.

We were pretty much laughing about it, this morning, with the cellphone guy. He said sometimes people come in laughing and sometimes people come in upset that there cellphone can't handle water. He was glad we were the type to laugh about it.

I really only lost one phone number and I just have to get my friend's cellphone number again. So, yeah, it's not the "cool" phone, but it will still work. It's not even that beat up, for being a 3yo cellphone. Gary's older cellphone is in far worse shape.

LoL, at least you are being good sports about it. I'll bet you'll never wash a cell phone again. Everyone will be very careful now!

It really bugs me that cell phones are so expensive to replace. They really must be ripping us off. I mean, we get free phones for signing up, but if it breaks or get washed (lol), it's several hundred dollars to replace it. Doesn't make sense. I guess they figure that you'll have to replace it, so they might as well make something off it.
Glad you had saved your old phone. We have our old phones too. I really don't like them, so hopefully ours keep on working at least till our contract is up!

Awww, that stinks!! You should check Ebay for a new phone, I've sold all of my old phones, even broken ones, on Ebay, and when I want to upgrade (or DH breaks his, a COMMON thing in our house) I buy my new one there.

Funny how that works with electronics. You just can't get them wet! ;-)

Crystal, it's no problem to take it in and get it programmed to work? I found one already.

By Crystal915 on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 04:40 pm:

Not at all, you can call and hook it up over the phone, they will walk you through it.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 05:32 pm:

Wow. I'll have to let DH know. He was worried about that part.

Just make sure that the one you buy is free and clear. A reputable seller will give you the ESN and IMEI number (or whatever is applicable for your carrier) so you can check with the carrier before buying. I've never run into a problem. And you can sell the waterlogged phone, as long as you clearly list that it has water damage. Depending on the model, you may not get much, but I once sold an i730 for Nextel that was broken in half (flip was snapped) for $70!

My dd has a two-year plan with Cingular. She dropped her phone in the water. Cingular would not let us buy a regular cheap phone to replace it since she has the two-year plan. We went to walmart and bought a cute $50. phone that works with Cingular.

I guess that's a thought, too, Annie.

That's why I love my Tracphones. They are inexpensive. Mike just bought a cool new flip phone that takes pictures, has a colour screen, etc. for $54.00 on the Tracfone website. You can port your old number, transfer your minutes, etc.

I will never go back to a contract phone. I don't like being "owned" by anybody for two years.
