IRS announces refund of federal telephone excise tax

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: IRS announces refund of federal telephone excise tax

I know I posted about this several months ago, but now it is official. Here's an article in Forbes - here's the link - Forbes

In brief, if you don't have your phone bills from March 2003 through the end of July, 2006 so you know the exact amount, you can take a "standard" deduction of between $30 to $60, depending on how many dependants you claim on your tax return. (Businesses will probably have to have records, but the IRS may work out a formula for them.)

This tax dates back to the Spanish-American war, in the late 1800s, when telephones were a luxury, and was just never dropped.

Ginny- I tried printing the article to give to my accountant, and it wouldn't print. Just the ad on the page printed. Do you know why?

Nope. Try highlighting and copying to a blank word processing page, or see if there is something on the IRS website.

Thanks, Ginny! That worked. :)
