Resource for all kinds of medical information

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: Resource for all kinds of medical information

The Mayo Clinic has a wonderful website with links to all kinds of medical information resources, from general medical information, doctor and hospital sites, drug and pharmacy information, to "med speak" - translation of medical terms, and hoaxes and rumors. I've bookmarked it.

Mayo

I found it in an article in our local legal newspaper about paralegal research aids.

Thanks for the info, Ginny! It's great to have CREDIBLE information to read, since there is so much MISinformation on the web.

That's exactly why I posted it, Hol. I know when I go looking for medical information on the web, I only pay attention to sites that are .edu or are for a hospital/clinic whose name I know and respect - like Mayo. I generally don't even read sites put up by individual doctors or practices, as they so often have their own axe to grind. (I have been following a series in the NY Times about the medical profession and money, and read an article of a cardiology practice in an Ohio area that does 3 times as many angioplasties as any other region - the hospital that serves that area has only this one cardiology group connected with it, and they tout angioplasties as the be-all and cure-all for heart/artery problems, not even trying drugs or other non-invasive treatments first. Now, I know angioplasty can be a life-saver, but there are other treatments, too.)

The article for paralegals that I read had several sites that I have bookmarked, mostly because I may need them for my job, but the Mayo site seems to be the very best site for laypersons to learn about diseases/conditions, diagnostic tests, drugs, etc. and especiall the Med Speak for translating all those cryptic things doctors say, and the sites on hoaxes and rumors.
