Let me tell ya about the wedding we went to...
First and most important, it was a dry wedding No wine to calm my nerves from the crazy kids in my other post. My dh grew up with the bride and she is Pakistani, so it was a Pakistani wedding. It "started" and i use the term loosely, at 6:30. That is what the invitation said. So we were there at 6:30 with about 5 other people. NO ONE ELSE showed up until about 7:30!!! The groom came in at 8:00. Behind him came his family, which consisted of probably 100 people, so that filled in a bunch of seats. We did not see the bride until 9:00. She came in with her father and brothers. They went up on the stage (for lack of a better term) and some man married them. I'm not sure who he was because i am obviously not educated on the Pakistani culture. So they got married at about 9:00 and dinner was served at 10:00. So it was a very loooong night. But i have to tell you that it was probably one of the most beautiful wedding's i have been to. The bride was wearing a beautiful Sari (sp?). Her family members painted henna art on her hands the night before, it was so neat. The other Pakistani women were all wearing brightly colored Sari's it was really really neat.
You had great patience. I would have left by 8!
Another one of dh's friends was at the table with us. He said he had been to a Pakistani wedding where they didn't get dinner served till 11:00! I think i would have left by then!
East Indian weddings are typically a couple of days long. I had a student teacher who brought in her wedding pictures, and they were amazing. It's too bad they didn't explain the times to you better. Since only 5 of you showed up "on time", I'm assuming all of the other guests knew what to expect.
Sounds like a pretty wedding, but not eating supper until 10pm wouldn't have made me very happy. Oh well, you have to go with the flow, sometimes!
After the day with the kids, I am surprised you had so much patience.
My doctor is East Indian and he went to a wedding this summer that lasted three days. They have different ceremonies that lead up to the actual wedding. Big difference over our 1 hour ceremonies and 4 hour after parties.. LOL
Yes, they did have more than one event for the wedding. We were invited to two of them, but only went to the one. Well, i sort of had to have patience. It was dh's friend who he hadn't seen in several years and he was really looking forward to the wedding. I actually kept forgetting about it ahd he had to keep reminding me that we had plans on that night So i knew he was excited about it. Plus he saw several people he went to high school with, so i couldn't exactly say "hey! forget this, lets get out of here" LOL It was a long night, but now i know how Middle Eastern weddings are!
Chalk it up to one of those experiences you may never have again, and the chance to learn something about another culture.
