Vulgar t-shirts

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Vulgar t-shirts
By Marg on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 12:57 pm:

What has happened to t-shirts.

A few weeks ago, our whole family was at the mall. dds are ages 14, 10 and 6.

A man had on a t-shirt with different sex positions. twig like figures in sex positions. Our middle dd noticed and I had to explain. She asked why someone would where that on a t-shirt.

Today, I passed a woman in a t-shirt with two views of giving the finger if you will.

What in the world is wrong with people. I was in a grocery store for heaven's sake.:(

By Luvn29 on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 02:31 pm:

It drives me insane, also. While at the Beach last weekend, there was a YOUNG girl, maybe 13-14 at the most, with a tank top on that read "REAL BOOBS" on it. We just about choked.

It sickens me to see some of these things...

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 05:15 pm:

Good grief! My kids don't like wearing shirts that say stuff like, "Too many boys, too little time!" I wouldn't want them to wear that, either. They make good choices, most of the time!

By Emily7 on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 05:39 pm:

I really hate seeing shirts like that.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 08:52 pm:

Agreed...

By Annie2 on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 10:59 pm:

Last fall at my 10 year old dd's softball practice a teenage boy had a tshirt with an outline drawing of a stripper on a pole with the words "I support single moms". Several of us told his mom that he shouldn't wear it to the ballpark. She agreed. (why she would let him wear it in the first place is beside the point!).

Today at my other dd's football game I saw a kid with a tshirt stating, "I love Hot Moms".

Besides the tshirt sayings, I CAN NOT stand the boys that wear their pants under their butts, showing their underwear. I even see it at the waterparks now. They wear two suits, keeping one under their butts. I just don't get it!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 11:08 pm:

I don't get that, either. There pants look like they are going to fall down!

By Hol on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 11:10 pm:

I TOTALLY agree. I was in American Eagle (or Abercrombie, I can't remember which), with Shawn. They had all these T-shirts with pretty blatant sayings. They were supposed to be a play on words, but the message was not very well disguised.

I also don't know what is wrong with parents who let their adolescent and teen daughters wear such things. I saw a young girl at the fair who had "Got Milk?" plastered accross her chest. And worse, a young boy who had on a black T-shirt with a white arrow pointing down toward his belt, and it said " Free Hand Cream Sample". And some of the shirts that they they sell AT the fair are disgusting, too.

I also don't like the short shorts with writing plastered accross the butt on young girls.

We have talked about this before; the lack of standards. I don't know what the world is coming to. There are also obscene
bumper stickers. My DH and I saw one recently and he said that when WE were kids, you would be pulled over by a police officer because that was considered public indecency.

I sure hope that things start turning around, and we can go back to wholesome values.

By Bellajoe on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 08:57 am:

I have seen some horrible t-shirts too. I can't think of any right now, but they make me jaw drop when i read them.

Someone should go up to the boys with the sagging pants and pull them down! Just to teach them a lesson. (not that it would really work :()

I saw a boy at the pool the other day with plaid boxers under his bathing suit, which was sagging. I thought that perhaps his bathing suit was too big, so he wore his undies under it! LOL
boy am i dumb. :)

By Debbie on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 09:44 am:

I think the slogan t-shirts are just terrible! I too, have seen some that just make my jaw drop.

When we were at Disneyland a few weeks ago, a teenager, who was entering the park in front of us, was told he couldn't enter with his shirt. He was told to change his shirt, or put it on inside out if he wanted to enter the park. He put it on insde out. I guess they have a rule against vulgar shirts in the park. I was very happy to see this!!

Oh...and I hate the baggy pants thing. My nephew does this, and spends all day pulling up his pants, so they don't fall all the way down. I asked him why he wore them if he had to pull them up all the time. His answer...they are what everyone else wears! Ugggg. I hope my boys have a mind of their own. I will say, they will not wear these, or vulgar shirts when they get older. No way!!!

By Kaye on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 10:16 am:

The baby outfit with MILF on it, is the worst shirt I have seen.

I love catchy tshirt phrases, but do not like ones that my kids aren't allowed to read :)

One of my new favs that I have seen. Says I am not with stupid anymore. Do you remember those shirts with the arrows. I just thought these were great.

By Hol on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 12:15 pm:

What does MILF mean? Is it printable on MV? :)

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 12:45 pm:

Mother I would like to **** 4-letter word, etc! I think you can figure it out!

By Kaye on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 01:16 pm:

that phrase was made popular by a movie called american pie. just awful!

By Nanaoie on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 02:49 pm:

I have never understood the phrase " baby girl" on the butts of these young girls.I have aso heard it in a few songs.....is it just me or does this not scream child ••••? How do these parents think that this is ok is beyond me. I can hear Dr Phil right now" WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!"....the thing is, they aren't. Then... they shake their heads and wonder why their daughters are having sex at 12-13-14............OK.stepping off my soapbox, all done

By Insaneusmcwife on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 03:55 pm:

I don't like the short shorts or pants with the writting across the butts either. I don't understand the things some people let their kids wear. I would never buy my kids anything vulgar but I do buy them some with funny saying on them.
Ds has a bunch:
Parents for sale
will trade sister for video game
I'm up and dressed what more do you want
the dog ate my homework
mom said no but dad said yes
Rated PG (permanently grounded)
he has a bunch of others but I can't think of what they are right now.
Dd has a couple that say:
I don't have to be good (front) I'm cute (back)
Angel to brat in 2.5 seconds
Drama Queen
I have one that says:
Out of my mind, please leave a message.
Dh has one that says:
I have gas! (it has a picture of a gas attendant)

By Hol on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 07:36 pm:

I can't BELIEVE that they would put such a filthy thing on anything (MILF), let alone BABY clothes!!! Ugghh!!!

I DID see a cute one at the fair on Friday, for Moms. It had the road sign for "Caution" and said: "Caution - Mom is Angry. Take alternate route!!"

I also like the one that says "Of All the Things I've Lost, I Miss My Mind the Most".

My oldest DS used to have a baseball hat that was supposed to look like a college hat. It said "Mental State". :)

By Annie2 on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 07:56 pm:

I like the one, "I'm not with stupid anymore"! That's great!

I must admit my girls have shorts that say "cheer" and "softball" on their behinds. I'm actually wearing shorts that say "Perdido Key" on the back of mine right now. I don't mind these sayings but I wouldn't let them wear sayings like "sweet thing", etc.

By Kaye on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 08:40 pm:

I think the shorts with writing just need to be worn with some warnings. First, tacky sayings are tacky sayings anywhere they are written, but on the butt they are worse :) And secondly, if you write on someones butt, someone will be looking to read. For teenagers, quite honestly they want boys looking and noticing....for toddlers, hmmm not so cute in my opinion. As an adult, hey point people where ever you want to look...just like swimsuits, dark bottoms and show some cleavage, it makes people not notice the fat rear!

By Boxzgrl on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 09:24 pm:

I don't care for the shirts either. I've noticed a few onesies that have come out recently... a lot more obscene than "MILF". Though I recently did see a funny one (though i'd still never put in on Nathan). It said "All my Mommy wanted was a back massage, and instead she got me." Again, cute. But not on a baby onesie.

By Paulas on Monday, August 21, 2006 - 01:42 am:

I especially don't like the FCUK brand of shirts. It doesn't matter how the letters are arranged, the meaning is the same.

I was in Please Mum the other day and they had t-shirts that said "if my job is school then where's my pay?"
It doesn't sound TOO horrible but it does reflect a negative attitude towards school. As a teacher, I see enough of this without having to show it on a shirt for a 6 year old!

By Unschoolmom on Monday, August 21, 2006 - 07:35 am:

I'm still chuckling at the 'Real Boobs' one.

I'm on the fence. People will be rude in many ways and at least if they have it displayed on their shirts it gives me a good oportunity to talk about it with the kids.

As for the, "if my job is school then where's my pay?", shirt...I think that's a darn good point.

By Imamommyx4 on Monday, August 21, 2006 - 10:14 am:

When my oldest ds was 14, he went on a band trip and came home with a t-shirt that had "Co-ed Naked, In-line Skating". He could not understand our reaction to this shirt. It disappeared (actually I took it). Don't know why I stuck it up in the top of my closet, but I found it about a year ago when he was 24. He said he'd wondered what had happened to it. But said he'd never wear something like that now and didn't know what he was thinking when he bought it.

I found it later that week cut up in the scrap rag bin in my dh's garage. Ds had done the cutting. Made me feel like we'd done at least one thing right.

By Hol on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 01:37 am:

I remember those "Co-ed naked......" shirts. They had everything imaginable....firefighting, basketball, golf etc..

At least they weren't as bad as the "Big Johnson" shirts that were popular at about the same time.

By Kaye on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 08:22 am:

lol..i remember those hol.

It is kind of funny, my 3rd grader has a tigger soccer shirt that says "let's kick some tail". I don't let him wear it to school, really only to soccer games. It has been a huge pain having a shirt he can't always wear.

By Dandjmom on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 10:25 am:

Whats more apaulling to me is that they make and sell these shirts in sizes for my 10 year old. No she doesn't wear them, but it makes me wonder what kind of mother would let there daughter wear something that says:

Where's the rent money?
Don't you wish your girl friend was hot like me?
Boys on the brain?
All I do is dream of boys.

And I've seen much worse.

By Amecmom on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 10:46 am:

I hate to say it, but I really boils down to taste and what one is exposed to. I'm sure that for some, the language used on these t-shirts is pretty tame compared to what they are used to hearing and saying.

I try so hard not to expose my children to vulgarity and it's getting harder and harder to do.

Ame

By Hol on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 11:14 am:

Dandjmom - That is disgusting!! You are so right about the size range of those clothes (not that it is appropriate for ANY age group). That's like advertising your child to pedophiles. With all of the publicity lately about the Jon Benet Ramsey case, it just makes it more scary.

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 11:30 am:

I don't like the vulgar and/or inappropriate shirts either, but I do buy fun and cute shirts with sayings for my kids. DD (8) is currently into monkeys so she likes the Bobby Jack shirts. Some are cute but there are others with attitude that I've said, "NO," to. She has one that says, "I'd rather be at the beach" that I wish came in my size. LOL!

Reading these posts brought back memories. In my college days I wore t-shirts that said, "Objects under this shirt are larger than they appear" and "They may be little but they're all mine!" LOL!

By Mrsheidi on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 11:53 am:

I have a "Save the Tatas" tank top that benefits research for breast cancer. They make others, but I wouldn't wear them...not at my age. :)

Save the Tatas

save the tatas

It's a fad and will disappear in time, I'm sure. Kids are always trying to be different and once every kid has them, they'll change again...just to be different.

By Cat on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 02:07 pm:

Wow! I can't believe some of these. :( I think the worst I've seen is one that said, "I'm an a$$hole. Deal with it." The one that bugged me the most was at a birthday party Randy went to for one of his friends that was turning 11. His mom had what looked like a college sweatshirt on. It said SAU. I got a closer look to see what college it was and it said, Smart A$$ University. TOTALLY inappropriate for a kid's birthday party, imho.

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 07:19 pm:

Check out the shirts in Gadzooks and Hot Topic. Granted, there are some pretty funny ones, but there are some in EXTREMELY poor taste.

And, some of you would probably faint if you saw the ones in the T shirt shops on Bourbon St. They are *really* vulgar and tasteless.....and it's not just T shirts, it's short-shorts, mini skirts, etc. And the sad thing is, I see kids - and yes, a 12 y/o is a kid - wearing this stuff.........

By Kim on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - 07:37 am:

I am surprised no one has mentioned the baby shirts that are circulating in emails lately. Some of them are downright disgusting and I would never put it on my baby. I'm not even going to describe them and I feel sorry for those kids whose idiot parents took pictures of them in the shirts.
