International calls

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: International calls
By Lauram on Monday, August 7, 2006 - 10:09 am:

I am wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper way to call internationally than directly from home. I just got a whopper of a bill from interviewing my au pair in Korea ($411). YIKES?! Are those phone cards better? Which one is the best deal? How do you use them/purchase them?

We used IDT always for our long distance service when we traveled overseas more often. I found that it was the cheapest.

What about usadata net? Don't know if you have this in your area. But you could go to their web site and check. Good Luck.

When calling friends stationed in Korea I've always used phone cards. Just check the rates to the particular country you are calling.

OK. I'll try to look into this. Thanks.

I can't figure out the IDT or usadata stuff.... I guess when you purchase a phone card (which I've never done), you ask about the rates to specific countries?! WHo do you ask? The cashier? DO they really know? Sorry I'm so clueless.

I called the 1-800 # for IDT (just for my regular long distance) then ended up getting a prepaid phone card for international calls depending on how long we were going to be gone. The customer service (live) is: 1800-889-9126.
HTH:)

The rates on phone cards are usually on display on the card. If not, ask the cashier. You may also want to talk to your LD provider (I can't say for sure, bec we have Vonage) but they may be able to give you a frequent caller rate.

I don't feel like I was very clear in my last post. When I called them about my regular long distance, I got the rates for international and they were great (that was to European countries though). They do their overseas rates by prepaid, so I 'bought' (over the phone, it was added to my regular monthly bill) a prepaid int'l card that I set the price for based on how long we would be on that particular trip. You can continue to add to it, etc. Hope that was more clear! :)

Thanks! I will check into this!
