Air Sick vs Sea Sick
Need advice ladies, If i get really bad nausea on airplanes what is the likely hood of it happening on a cruise?
If you're like me, LIKELY! LOL! In fact, my motion sickness is worse on boats. Dramamine is my best friend.
But can you have fun while drugged?! DA@@ kids I never had this until after kids now I cannot even ride in the back seat of any vehicle. HA HA Just gotta love'em huh!!!
Tonya, ask your doctor for a motion sickness patch. I used them when I went to France and England for the flight, the ferry across the English Channel and all the driving and they are miraculous!
VERY likely!! I think a cruise is worse personally, but everyone is different. I haven't used the patch before but have heard good things. I would try it! Dramamine works for me but knocks me out so that's no help for you. My MIL swears by the wrist bands with the pressure point thingies for cruises but I've never used them.
Forgot to mention... A full dose of Dramamine knocks me out, but half a dose does the trick.
I have a very high tolerance for meds I took 2 dramamine on my first flight coming back home in January it helped but I still had slight nausea we layed over for like 2 hrs and I took 3 that did the trick but still didn't knock me out. I won't need this stuff until next year i was just curious. We were wanting to do a cruise for our honeymoon but I hate the thought of being sick my entire honeymoon.
I get car sick, and very easily get motion sick. I don't even often do roller coasters.(Even the kiddy rides make me ill! LOL) I took Bonine on the cruise we took, and I never felt sick once. I also chose a very big boat! HTH
Another vote for Bonine - over the counter, comes in chewables. Works great, doesn't make you sleepy. You can take it the entire time you're on a cruise if you need to. I get motion sickness on cruise ships if the water is *rough*. I also get motion sickness *sometimes* in planes and cars. I keep Bonine with me all the time. I have the wrist bands and sometimes they work, sometimes not, for me. I've never tried the patch, so I can't vouch for that, but my sister swears by it.
I've never heard of Bonine. I'll have to look into it! Is it OK for kids??
I don't get airsick, but I have gotten seasick when on a boat overnight. I haven't heard of Bonine either, but it's worth trying. You may even want to talk to your doc, I don't know if they would give you Phenegren or not, but it's worth asking!
We take Bonine here it works good for us.
Bonine! First cruise I slept walked through because of dramamine. Bonine doesn't make you sleepy and it works. My son and I take one every night before bed while we are on our cruises. We start taking it the night before we leave.
Ask your dr for a prescription for Transderm-Scop patches. You just put it on and leave it for 3 days. Replace every 3 days as long as you are on the cruise. Very little to no drowsiness. The Bonine and Dramamine and Antivert can cause drowsiness and usually have to be taken every 6 to 12 hours to continue their effects.
Yes, Antivert and Phenergan, as someone mentioned, can both cause severe drowsiness, especially in those not used to the meds...
True, Phenergan works wonders but it totally knocks you out. I have an Rx for it, and when I need to take it, I sleep like a rock.
People on the Cruise message boards rave about Ginger pills to help with sea sickness. They said it works wonders and no sleepiness. I did not get sea sick on our first cruise, which Im surprised. I get car sick(not to the point of throwing up)just to the point of feeling sick to my stomach. It happens with a lot of stop and go driving. When we were on a cruise 3 yrs ago, one night I woke up to use the bathroom and apparently we were passing through some rough water. Thats the only time on a cruise I actually felt a little motion sickness. We are going on a cruise in 2 weeks. I bought a bottle of the ginger pills At Walmart to bring with us. I figure you just never know. The other stuff makes me so tired.
I have also heard that Ginger works very well, but haven't tried it myself. I haven't heard of Bonine but will get some for sure! I can't ride in a car, front or backseat, anymore without feeling nauseated. I tend to feel a little nauseated on the descent of the flight but the rest I'm fine. Boats are bad for me. I think my motion sickness has continually gotten worse as I've gotten older. It's even worse in the car when it's raining. Sometimes driving myself in the rain makes me nauseated. I can't even sit in a swing at the park without getting weird.
Jackie, ginger DOES work, however, I would recommend picking up some chewable Bonine before you go, kids can take it too. It does NOT make you drowsy at all and works very well.
My older 2 kids did not get sea sick on our first cruise, and I dont suspect they will be this time around either. I bought it mainly for me LOL...just in case. My sister in law and brother in law will be on the cruise with us as well. Im not too sure if they will get sea sick either. My brother in law use to be in the Navy, so Im guessing he will be ok. I cant believe the cruise is 2 weeks from today.
I watched a Myth Busters one night in which they tested various methods to combat motion sickness. They tested Dramamine (made the 2 guys sleepy but did help the nausea), pressure bracelets (helped nada), ginger tabs (best pick of all the stuff they tested), and a couple other products that were useless. A nurse I work with also loves the ginger tabs for stomach bugs. Says its wonderful. I'd say it's worth a try. Prescription-wise, I still lay my money on the Trans-derm Scop patches. My dh gets really bad motion sickness. After one trip using them he said he finally figured out why he married me.
I'm fine on an airplane but near death on a boat (of any kind). I used the patches on our cruise last year and survived going to Bermuda through Hurricane Wilma/Alpha. I'm sold.
