Pick-up and Go cellphone HELP!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Pick-up and Go cellphone HELP!
By Tonya on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - 10:59 am:

I need to go today after work and get a cell phone from somewhere that I can just put minutes on and not lose them for a long time.

My house phone jack went out and it was going to cost me over $100 for AT&T to come out and fix it. They suck.

So I called my cable company to get phone services through them and they cannot come out until August 14th. Ugh!!!

So help ladies.

Hmmm...by the time you get a decent phone and minutes, it'll probably be close to $100 anyhow!

Do you live in an area where you will get good signal at your house? This probably isn't a problem for you in Michigan, but for us in VA, the mountains cause a problem sometimes...

I have had wonderful experiences with tracfone, though a lot on here haven't. I think you do fine with it until you try to get one of their extended plans, like unlimited minutes for a year, etc. But if you just buy a regular phone card of minutes, or do it online, you seem to do fine with them...

The minutes last for 60 days, unless you pay a little extra to have them last longer, and if you don't use all of yours during those two months, buy a small card, and your unused minutes roll over. So you never lose your minutes.

That's the only one we use. My hubby and I both have one... No problems.

But maybe some of the other ladies can give you advice on others out there...

I have been meaning to switch to the cable company for some time this just sealed the deal. I have lineback (insurnance) on my phone through AT&T and they are telling me it is not part of that. Which is bull!!

I will save over $20 a month by switching and the coverage is better with more features. So 2 weeks is not too bad plus I keep my numbe.

I don't care if it is a cheap phone as long as it works in an emergency.

I would be willing to go to Wal-mart or Target or something to get one of those pre-packaged phones doesn't matter as long as it works when I need it to. I will not spend $100 on a cell phone.

I know others have said they've gotten bad customer service through Tracfone but we've had them for a while now and haven't had any trouble with the phone, their website or their customer service. I've also heard good things about the Pay As You Go service.

Is there a Walmart near by, I haven't used a lot of the pre-paid phones, but most of them only give you three months to use the air time. Boost mobile I'm not sure how long they give you but my cousin has them.

But Cingular they say that there minutes roll over, yes with the the pre-paid and just about all the stores. Walmart, Target, Radio Shack, and then some carry Go Phone by Cinguliar. Good luck.

And ouch on the 100 to fix the jack, Not trying to butt in, but you didn't have wire solutions (or some sort of wire protection)? You may want to look in to see if yuor cable company offer any type of wire protection ( usually istn' that much) I've found it to be less then the tax on my bill. But with a 2 year old runnign around the house sometimes things can happen ( like cords get pulled formthe wall jack)It's been real helpful I haven't had to pay for any repairs like that yet.

Ditto on the Tracfone. We LOVE ours. I just saw a $20.00 one in Family Dollar. It comes with a 10 minute card to get it activated. Just buy a 100 minute card (or less), add it, and you're good to go for 60 days. Even after you get your new home phone service, you might want to keep the Tracfone. Just add the minimum number of minutes (60) every 60 days to keep it active. It's good to carry, or to keep at home in case your home phone goes out...storms and such.

That doesn't seem right that AT&T won't cover your jack. I thought that is what wire protection is for. If you pay for that plan, then I would ask to talk with a supervisor, and threaten to go to the Public Utilities Commisssion. (The phone company is ALWAYS liable for anything OUTSIDE the home. You don't need a wire plan for that).

We switched to cable phone a few months ago, and we are very satisfied. I wanted high speed internet (the dial up was TERRIBLE). Since I have digital cable TV to begin with, it was very easy to add the cable modem for the computer. Then, by switching to their phone service, too, they "bundled" the fees. It costs me less than before because I no longer have to pay for Earthlink, or a separate phone line for the computer. And by going with them, they take 10% off each service for the first six months. It costs me about $200.00 for all three, and we have unlimited long distance calling, I kept my same phone number, and all the services I had before like call waiting, caller ID etc.. We also have digital cable TV with 6 HBO's and 3or 4 Showtimes.

I went to a supervison and they were ruder that the customer service people. I have been meaning to switch for a while this just sealed the deal. I have the protection through teh cable company too so it all worked out in the end.

I am going to go to the corner phone store tonight and look into the Cingular to go phone for $30 and then I will have a cell for emergencies too. We haven't had cells for over 18 months and I like it except for being on the road with nothing at night alone. So Rich agreed this is the best way for us to go.

And like someone else said I am saving a ton of money bundling my services up and they locked my rate in until end of 08.

We love Pay as You Go through Cingular. We've been on them for about ayear now, we got the cheap phones (no, they are NOT cool but they were $48 each) and we are saving around $50/mth on our cell phone bill compared with our old Verizon plan that we NEVER used. Good luck getting what you need!

Wow Hol, yeah I seen the same tracphone in Family Dollar for 19.99 also. I didn't know and or think that prices where the same at all stores, I figured it would be cheaper other places then it is here in the city Wash.,DC

But anyway, I've never used it personally , I've heard different stories good and bad, but we have to be our own judge. But with my daughter going baackto school I'm considering getting this for her ( she had the Fire Fly) from target, which she lost in May. So I will not spend another $100.00 dollars for a pre paid cell phone for her right now maybe when she is older , she is only 10 and I feel that she is only going to loose it again.

Tonya I haven't had a cell phone in a while either, but it's fine like you said , until you are out late at night or in my case sometimes even the daytime, they are trying to curb violence and drug activity so much here , that you can sometimes walk 6 to 8 blocks before you find a pay phone. Even one of your shopping malls have removed all of there phones. So you almost have to have a cell phone.
