Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2006: Price for 2 kids (clothes)
By Brandy on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 03:55 pm:

going into 3rd and 6th grades $313.13 lol i was like well we need to put some of these shirts back they said no they didn't want to i said fine but are you going to help pay for this and they said yeah well nick saw the total bill and he was like well we can put some of these shirts back lol i was like nope we are getting them = ) i might change my mind after Daniel sees how much it is but honestly for 8 pairs of jeans plus 13 and 14 shirst for the boys that's not too bad...

By Brandy on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 03:57 pm:

shirts that is lol = )

By Tarable on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 04:06 pm:

You are lucky.. I have 2 girls 6th and 4th and I have spent almost that much on just one of them (the older one had a huge growth spirt this summer and nothing but her jeans fit her anymore), but it did include shoes and shirts but only 2 pair of pants. I am not looking forward to my younger one starting to only want brand name clothes.. It is outrageous. And that was at places like JC Penny and Kohls and even Target for a few T-shirts.

By Tonya on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 04:17 pm:

My parents rule when growing up was if we want designer instead of wal-mart or kmart they would pitch in what the wal-mart or kmart cloths would cost we pay the difference. It worked well and it is the same rule in my house when the kids get old enough to want designer stuff.

I haven't done any shopping for Timmy yet and Jade is getting tons of hand-me downs from my best friend so I don't have to do too much for her either this year.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 04:52 pm:

I don't think I can get by that cheap. Junior-size clothes are expensive! LOL!

Where did you go shopping?

By Yjja123 on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 04:57 pm:

We never did the back to school shopping thing. I shop for them year round. We love the outlet mall. I will buy a size bigger if it is seasonal. Living in the south though, they generally wear everything year round.

By Tarable on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 05:10 pm:

I don't normally do "back to school" clothes shopping but this year none of her shirts fit her anymore. Junior clothes are much more expensive. As for the brand name stuff well it is hard to make her "pay" for part of them when she is only 11 and doesn't do anything to make money, so our deal is she does extra chores around the house to pay for them. I want her to like the clothes she has so she will actualy wear them so I try to buy what she likes. That doesn't mean taht I let her get all Mudd or whatever is "in" today. It just means we don't have to go with the cheapest thing out there. It was soo funny when we were shopping. My DD would tell me mom I can't get this shirt it is too expensive becasue it was over $12... I was like.. almost everything is over $12. we will just have to see. I guess she is very observant when it comes to how much things are.

I would love to know where you went shopping and only paid a little over 300 for 8 pair of jeans and 27 shirts.. that is a really price.

By Yjja123 on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 05:22 pm:

I have an obsession with clothes. Luckily, I live in an area where clearance sales are dirt cheap on name brands. I am a bargain shopper!
I grew up with very few clothes. It was difficult. I vowed that my kids will always be well dressed. There has been several times I have given away clothing that they never got to (too many outfits in their closet). Ridiculous huh?
As far as junior clothes go, do you have any outlet stores or even TJMaxx or Ross? I find junior clothes for less than girls clothing. My daughter can wear either and I often buy juniors because of the cheaper prices.

By Cybermommyx4 on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 07:22 pm:

I shop at consignment shops for my boys, but DD usually can't find *her* styles there. I took the 9 and 10 year olds to Wal*Mart last night to put backpacks, binders, and school supplies on layaway....almost $100! 8-0 I'm so glad my teenagers are doing their own.....oldest DS is going off to college, so school supplies takes on a whole new meaning!! I don't know how any of us manage it anymore with the prices of things!

By Mommmie on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 07:43 pm:

I'll spend about $250 getting all the pieces to my son's uniform, not counting shoes. I think the uniform shoes are about $50. Uniforms are supposed to be cheaper (ha ha), but with growth spurts you have to keep buying pieces. I think you did very good!

By Momofmax on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 09:31 pm:

I spent about $250 to $300 on uniforms, shoes, and school supplies. Wouldn't be too bad except that he's switching schools this year so I have to buy everything new. The uniforms, etc. that I bought last year got worn for two weeks until Katrina and then we homeschooled. They are brand new so I'm donating them. Both public and private schools wear uniforms but they are so picky that I don't think it's cheaper. Plus, they need regular clothes (not as much though) for weekends and after school. Uniforms are easy each morning so I don't really mind.

By Hol on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 11:30 pm:

My youngest (17), will wear anything. Walmart is fine with him. I still buy his clothes because he is so easily pleased. My 18 y/o, however, is another story. Everything has to be Abercrombie this, and American Eagle that. Yet, this is the same kid that I have to say to him, "go shave before you go to work. You look like a werewolf". :) I totally don't get the name brand thing. It's not like the clothes are quality made. I told him that they are all probably made in the same sweatshop. However, if they sew that little "moose" or whatever it is, on it, the price goes up at least twenty dollars.
I refuse to pay for his clothes. He works two jobs, and goes to college. If he wants the brand names, he has to pay for them. I DO still pay for their tennis shoes in September.
My "Mr. Abercrombie" is finding out about the "real world". He has been looking for a car, and can't find anything in his price range. My other DS puts all of his money in the bank, so he will be able to get a much better car.

Like you, Yvonne, I didn't have many clothes growing up, either. I learned to sew and made most of mine. I had older female cousins, so I got their hand-me-downs,too. The only things I got brand new were shoes, and my Grandma bought me a winter coat each year until high school.

By Conni on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 08:50 am:

Do you know that my ex husb took the boys shopping while they were in New Orleans and actually bought them some nice clothes!!! I nearly fainted when they came home. :) In all these years he has only taken them too Wal-Mart or Kohls (which is fine). And I am the one that will take them too the mall and they will get a few items from AE and A and F or Dillards, etc... (off the sale racks of course!) He actually took them too these stores this time and HE ended up buying some clothes right along with them. :) The boys thought that was really cool! Their Dad is really stylin' now apparently. lol

I need to go shopping for school supplies and school clothes/ shoes for the kids but have not had time yet. :( argh

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 09:11 am:

We do have TJ Maxx. I never heard of Ross. It would be nice to have an Old Navy where we live! We are in this no-man's land, being 50 miles from Milwaukee and about 60 miles from Green Bay. We don't have any of the really cool stores here! So, my kids really don't wear Aeropostale, American Eagle and Abercrombie and Fitch, because we have to drive so far to get to them.

By Conni on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 09:44 am:

Dawn, 20 yrs ago we had to drive 2 hrs to get too a decent mall. Then we got some good stores in the mall about 20 min away and now we have a new mall going in literally 3 minutes from my house!!! It opens in Oct., so I am not sure on all the stores that will be there. I know that we will have a Dillards, JCpenneys, AE, Abercrombie, Coldwater Creek, and many others... IMAX theatre. I am so excited. LOL

A new Starbucks just opened about 3 min away in the other direction. It is on the way too Blake and Brad's schools... :) We were really excited too see that!!! We did have too drive about 15 min for Starbucks. :)

We *finally* got our Old Navy/Gap/Kohls about 4yrs ago.

We have a TJ Maxx 20 min away that I like.

Needless too say we really appreciate having all this shopping so close by now!!!!!! :)

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 09:45 am:

I grew up with very few clothes. It was difficult. I vowed that my kids will always be well dressed.

Yvonne, you and me both!! The only store-bought clothes I owned till I was in maybe 6th grade were Easter clothes, sweaters and some pants. My mom used to make our clothes and taught me to sew in 4th grade so *I* had to make my dresses. I hated it.

I LOVE clearance sales. I shopped them all the time when the kids were growing up (STILL do!), and I shopped Wal Mart and even Sams for clothes. And there was a kids' clothing shop, the name I can't remember now, nearby that had the cutest stuff and would have these twice yearly sales, and I could get whole wardrobes for the kids, well, mostly for Jen, for about 1/4 the normal cost.

Even when our schools went to uniforms, it wasn't cheap - especially for Jen, it was hard finding pants that fit. But the white polo style tops were easy - every store had those on sale.

Conni, I want to know what your boys honestly thought about this area. How much of the hurricane damage did they actually see? And I want to know where they went shopping!!!! LOL

By Brandy on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 09:59 am:

We went to Walmart but it wasn't about name brand lol it was just expensive to me.. = )it was nicholas and he wanted certain shirts that would of been less money probably if i would of picked them out.Tonya it was the same way in our family if you wanted designer or more than i think it was $200 we had to purchase our own i think that's a good idea.I think by nick and alex having to pay for their stuff they are learning responsibility too so that's okay they wanted more than i was willing to get them lol = )

By Brandy on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 10:13 am:

Well i also Made Nick get 2 nice tops and all he said was well i'm only going to wear them on picture day and at home lol = ) well i guess he will get some use out of them = )

By Brandy on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 10:15 am:

also i usually do the clearance thing too but i really can't afford to buy them straight out right now and i can't go to meijer because their layaway is closed right now until get this Aug.13 just in time for school to start... geeeshh

By My2girlygirls on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 11:11 am:

Speaking of uniforms my dd is starting middle school this fall and her school has uniforms. I am having the hardest time finding yellow blouses..Not polos but button up blouses. I can find white or blue but not yellow. Any tips on where to look?

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 01:28 pm:

Ummmmmmmmmmmm eBay? LOL Google it, you may be surprised what comes up.

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 01:35 pm:

Found this:

yellow uniform shirts

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 01:37 pm:

THESE come in yellow as well.

By Mommmie on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 01:43 pm:

The uniform store we have to buy uniforms from will sometimes allow non-member schools to buy pieces. Maybe you have a uniform store in your area to find yellow? Also check Lands End.

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 02:04 pm:

Lands End

I think Penney's has uniforms, too.

JC Penney

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 02:06 pm:

We USED to have a Penney's store, but they closed it and put a Hobby Lobby there.

By My2girlygirls on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 02:19 pm:

I found some online! There is a bigger variety than I thought! Thanks for the advice. :-)

By Hol on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 04:06 pm:

We are in the boondocks, too. It is 50 miles to Providence to the NICE mall. It is 35 miles to the "just okay" mall in Warwick, both north of us. We also have another nice mall about 25 miles to the south of us, in Connecticut. We only have JC Penney and Walmart within a ten mile drive. Also, an Applebee's.

If you want Starbucks (not me. I'm a Dunkin Donuts girl), you have to drive 22 miles. There is also a new Panera Bread, which I LOVE!

I do a lot of online shopping. With gas prices what they are, it is cheaper and more convenient for me.

My boys like to go to the mall, just for fun. Not me. I get what I went for and leave. :)

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 04:54 pm:

As much as I love to go to the mall, I love online shopping more! I almost always find online coupons for free shipping or 10% off, or so much off orders over a certain amount.

And - if you find something you like in the mall - say at a shoe store, but they don't have your size in a particular color, you can go to their website, example being Nine West, and more often than not, find what you want.

I bookmark my favorite online shopping sites and check them weekly for sales.

Back to Brandy's original point - I remember how much it cost to clothe kids for school PLUS the cost of all the school supplies. It's a huge hit on your wallet! Very often I buy school clothes for Madison to help Jules out, so I'm still *sort of* in the back to school loop.

By Melissa on Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 09:36 pm:

DD is going into 4th and we went school shopping today. Usually we pretty much buy what we want and she has always been very well dressed, ( I love shopping) but she really hasn't cared until now. I decided I need to be paying better attention to what I spend so I told her we will take 400.00 cash with us and when it's gone we are done. She found lots at Target she wanted and then 200.00 later she was upset to think she didn't have a lot left to spend. It made her realize that if you buy a shirt in every color then you don't have as much to spend later. This was the best thing I could have done. At first she was sulky about it but after awhile we talked and she realized that many of her friends don't have half that to spend. We went to Kohls, Marshalls and Old Navy and she did a great job of choosing things that went together and seemed pretty proud of herself.

By Hol on Sunday, July 30, 2006 - 09:56 pm:

I LOVE Old Navy. The clothes are very reasonable, and they hold up well, too. Plus, it's the only place where DS Mike can get a good fit with jeans.

I also buy them for my grandaughter. They aren't in any one size for very long at this age, but they don't cost a lot. Not like Baby Gap.

PS* I LOVE the Hobby Lobby. I wish we had one here. I went in one in Nebraska, and DH had to pry me out of there. :)

By Bellajoe on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 05:14 pm:

I just went to Target today and got my kids some school clothes. I had a 10% off your bill coupon so we got dd some clothes for 2nd grade and ds some clothes for kindergarten. He was funny. The only shirts he wanted were tank tops! LOL I had to inform him that it wasn't going to be summer forever.
I hate clothes shopping for them because nothing fits their waists! They are too skinny. If it is long enough, than it is to big in the waist. If it fits the waist, it's too short. I can't win. We got the adjustable waist bands but they have to adjust it to the last button so the waists are all bunched up. oh well.

Ds was so excited to pick out his book bag for kindergarten. He picked out one with dinosaurs.

I ended up spending about $250.00 on all the clothes, 2 back packs and 2 lunch boxes, plus a swiffer vac for me :) not school related, but i wanted it.

By Brandy on Monday, July 31, 2006 - 11:21 pm:

I hate the adjustable waists and every pair of pants seem to have them now lol = )

By Paulas on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 01:25 am:

I love Old Navy too. However, today a friend told me she was boycotting Old Navy b/c they make thongs for kids!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe it? Why would they do that???

Today I discovered La Senza Girl. My DD (10) and I had so much fun and spent way too much money :)

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:19 pm:

Well, we gave Sarah an Old Navy gift card, for her birthday, so I'm sure we will be going there, eventually. I wish we had one in town. We have to drive an hour, either north or south, to find one, around here!

I thought it was Abercrombie and Fitch, that made the thongs for kids.

Milwaukee Journal article from 2004 about clothes for kids at A&F.

CNN Money article about kids' thongs at A&F

I googled thongs kids Old Navy and only came up with links for flip-flops and that kind of "thong!"
