Then and Now
I was at my parents' house today and they gave me the medical bill they recently found from when I was born!! I was born in 1975 (I'm 31), my mom had a c-section, and the TOTAL bill for the doctor's services was $350!!!! LOL That wasn't what SHE paid (she has fantastic insurance and always has), that was the TOTAL. She actually paid $5 I think. I thought that was just a blast from the past. I never saw my ob's bill for MY daughter's c-section birth, but my hospital bill alone was $25K. I think I'm going to put *my* birth bill and Natalie's in her scrapbook. Can you imagine what Natalie's total will be if she ever has children?? I just thought that was too funny so I had to share!
That is a neat idea to put it in her scrapbook! I can't believe the difference in price!
Yes I can , I don't have mines from when I was born, but I do have both of my children's and this is something that I have placed in there baby books and there is a large difference in price from 1995 when dd was born and 2003 when ds was born. I'm not looking at them right now ( i'm at work) but I would guess there was at least a difference of over 4,000.
Obviously I don't have the bills from when J & J were born, but they were just 15 months apart, and there was a difference of $1000 in the doctor's fee alone. Couldn't really judge by those delivery/hospitalization costs anyway, as Jeff was in the NICU for nearly a week, and with Jen I was induced. But I do know that in just over a year, the costs went up a great deal. I think about medical costs all the time for my kids as they have grown into adulthood, and wonder what the future holds in that regard.
My mom was sick with bronchitis when I was born by c-section. She spent a week in the hospital, and it cost $3000.
I have no idea what my parents paid for my birth in 1948! In fact, I don't ever remember health insurance even being mentioned when I was growing up. The doctor came to the house if we were sick, and Mom or Dad paid him cash. (I think a house call was $2.00!). We also had one doctor that took care of us for everything. My own kids births were all covered by "Uncle Sam", as we were military. However, I seem to remember paying a fee for telephone and television in my room. We stayed in the hospital 5 days in those days! (1972 ans 1976).
Uhm Hol, i'm jealous, now of days I think you may get a few hours( just joking) but seriously if it's vaginal birth and all goes well, you turned loose within 24 hours. I delivered my daughter at 6:42pm on a Tuesday, I was picked -up by my aunt at 12:13 pm the following day. My nurse he came in with my discharge papers around 9:30 am and kept rushing me as too when I was going to be leaving. I thought that was so rude, here I was this new mother and I was just being sent home. Now with my son. I delivered him at 1:47, mom and baby where cleaned up and places in room around 2:30 am. My doctor who missed my delivery came by around 9ish in the morning to see me , the baby's doctor came by a few minutes later to check the baby and make a folow-up appiontment for 1 month. And then the nurse came to take the baby to be circumsiced (sp) around 1:30, at 6:pm my aunt was picking me up I was on my way home.
My hospital bill was around $25K because I was in the hospital for 5 nights and 6 days. It was AWFUL. We couldn't wait to get home.
Letishe - Yes, looking back, it was nice to have all that time in the hospital. Especially with my first one, because I was afraid to take her home. I had no help, and didn't know much about taking care of babies. Thank goodness for motherly instinct. You just figure it out. However, when my DS was born four years later, I really WANTED to go home because I missed my DD something awful. They didn't allow little ones to come up and see Mom in those days, either. I could only talk to her on the phone.
I have NO idea what it cost to have my babies. We had cadillac health insurance and it covered everything! I only had to pay about $40 to cover my private room! I really don't remember any dollar amounts! Talking to DH, he says it was about $6-7000 for the c-sections and all that. I'm sure the health plan from the Marshfield hospital, isn't quite so deluxe anymore! Don't ask me about Emily's appendix surgery, though. We paid a lot more out of pocket, for that, but it was still quite a break from paying the whole thing!
