Wedding attire opinion needed
Dh and I are attending a wedding for his former collegue. It's an EVENING wedding in early Aug. We live in FL, it's not specified as black tie and the reception is being held in a restaurant which is attached to numerous night clubs/bars....New Orleans style venue. I have a strapless black dress. It fits great, looks great on me, , but am worried that I shouldn't wear black to a wedding. Am I being too old-fashioned? Dh doesn't understand my concern. LOL Dh will wear a black suit. My dh wants me to wear it....what do you think?
I say wear it! I think black is perfectly appropriate for an evening wedding.
As it's strapless, can you take a fancy shawl or stole with you and decide when you get there whether to wear it or carry it? Or maybe, wear it at the wedding and not at the reception?
Totally appropriate. Lots of people wear black to weddings now.
Yes, I do have a beautiful wrap to wear with the dress. Also, a great pair of high heeled sandals that are very comfortable. I actually want to wear this dress because my sandals are so comfortable! I'm concerned on the color. I was brought up not to wear black to a wedding..then again, that was for morning weddings....way back in the olden days!
For an evening wedding, it is totally appropriate. I would even finish it off with a beautiful brooch. Might be too warm for a wrap. Add a little color in the make up.
Yes, wear it. I just bought a dress for my brother's wedding and it is black. I really liked the style of the dress, so I got, it even though it is black. I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing black to a weddding. It sounds like a great dress.
Thank you, ladies! Now my Dh is saying "I told you so!". I don't have a brooch but I do have a sapphire necklace (almost a choker) and earrings, that match.
From an etiquette web site "I've been invited to an evening wedding and wonder if it's okay to wear a black dress? Are there any etiquette rules on taboo colors to wear at weddings? Signed, What to Wear? Dear What to Wear, These days, it's fine to wear black at a wedding held in the evening or during the day. Some brides even choose black as the color for their bridesmaids' dresses. There aren't really any taboo colors for weddings. Although, guests should not wear all-white outfits so as not to compete with the bride. Some brides like the mother and mother-in-law to coordinate their outfits and colors to not clash with the wedding colors."
Ditto Yvonne. When my sister got married years ago, she had a very formal evening wedding. Her bridesmaids wore black tea gowns/black shoes, it was very attractive. It is acceptable here to wear black to weddings - in fact, I have done it myself. Wear your dress and shoes, etc. and have fun!!
I always wear balck to weddings! My bridesmaids dresses were black and that was in 1991. I think it will be fine.
And my gosh Annie, it is SO DARN HOT!!!! You probably will not need the wrap! I wish it would just rain. Has it rained by you? It keeps bypassing us totally!
i always wear black dresses to weddings, it's very slimming I say "go for it!"
Thank you ladies. I'm glad you all agree that I can wear this dress. As I stated before it is very flattering, comfortable and I love my sandals. Another issue that I have...I have strap marks from my bathing suit. I know that looks very tacky with a strapless dress. I am trying to find a bandeau top to go to the beach in for the next few weeks. If I can't find one, I will put self-tanning lotion on my strap marks. I know, what's a woman to do?! Kim, it is so hot and muggy. We had about two inches of rain today and it seems like we may get more tonight. Not enough, though.
Double post
Wear it...Black is fine for an evening wedding.
suntan topless :P My vote is with everyone else and I would Love to see a picture
Black is very common at weddings these days- in fact I've only worn black dresses the past 5 years or so. It's a good color on everyone, so it's very common. I suggest going to a tanning place to get rid of the strap marks. Many have specials where you only pay a little bit for two or three sessions. I've had to do it in the past myself and it's a quick and heat free way to get rid of the marks. I usually cover my face or other areas I don't want to get tan. Good luck and have fun!
