Baby Bird Fell Out of Nest!
I found a note from my husband this morning not to use our side door because a baby bird fell out of it's nest. He said if it was still there when he came home he'd take care of it. I assume he thinks the parent birds will pick it up and put it back, but they don't do that, do they? The poor little thing is just lying on its side and breathing very heavily. It barely has any feathers yet. The nest is inaccessable, so I can't put it back in. I don't want to just leave it. We have wild life here that would make it a tasty meal in a second. Is there anything I can do? Thanks! Ame
Where is the nest? Poor bird. I wonder if the mommy will rescue it ?? Humm I would put it back in the nest but since you can't access it, I don't know what I would do either. Not much help here Sorry
Oh, I so know how you feel! We had robins make a nest in one of our hanging flower baskets on our front porch, and while it has been a lot of fun for us to watch them, now that the babies are big, it has been very stressful worrying about them! We haven't been able to sit on our porch for fear of scaring them out of their nest too soon, but one jumped out anyway, when we weren't looking, and sadly, we found it dead in our driveway, it looked like a cat got to it. Then, while I was watching through my kitchen window, a second one jumped out, and was hopping around crying, my husband went out and picked it up and put it back in the nest. The next day we noticed again one was gone from the nest, and we couldn't find it anywhere, hopefully it is ok. Just yesturday, the last one jumped out and was hopping around the yard, and the mother was still bringing it worms! We worried all evening, and my younger son kept watch for cats for as long as he could, and then we went inside for the night, so we sure hope it made it ok! If I were you, I would pick it up and try and put it back....is the nest too high? Could you maybe get a ladder? Good luck!
Thanks, The nest is too high and under the eaves and behind the chimmney flashing somewhere. I can't even see it,let alone get to it. The sparrows have been nesting there for years. It's still just lying on the ground, breathing heavily. Even if I were to take it in, I wouldn't know what to feed it - or how ... Also, if it fell from so high, it may be hurt. Keep the ideas coming, please. Jodi, bless you, I'd have gone nuts by now ...
I would pick it up and place it in a tree or high hanging place somewhere. However you have to know that if the mom isn't coming around there may be an issue. There may be something wrong with it and she pushed it. Sometimes birds just fall, the wind, etc knocks them out. The sides of nest are usually very high though. The trick to picking them up is don't squeeze too hard!
Ame, Call the vet or a wildlife rescue they will give you the best advice. The mom can't rescue it, it can't fly and she can't pick it up. Please let us know what happens.
ame, Please go to bluebirdnut.com they are very knowledgeable not only where bluebirds are concerned but all type baby birds. Please let us know...
If you leave it alone the parents will take care of it. It may die though due to the shock of the fall.
Take a basket or some sort of container, stuff it with paper towels to make a "nest". Put the baby in it and put the "nest" as high up in the tree as you can get it. The parents will still come down and feed it.
The best thing to do is let nature takes it's course. The mommy bird will come down to help it if she thinks it is worth saving.
I just had this issue...remeber Nest mites. Well if the baby is healthy enought to live then the mother bird will still try to save it. Can you pick it up and put it back in the nest so the mother can feed it and protect it? Birds can't smell so she won't know you did this. Shelly had a great suggestion.
Hi everyone, I liked Shelly's suggestion and I went to the website that Kelly suggested. I happily constructed a nest from an old gallon jug but when I went to put the nestling inside, the bird had died. I felt sort of relieved that the poor thing was out of its misery. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Ame
