Every heard of camp with no swimming?
My 7 yr old is going to girlscout camp this week. It is just day camp from 9-4. This is the first year she has done daycamp. The forms said to bring swimsuit, towel, sunscreen etc... I just assumed there would be swimming, somewhere. This year the camp is at a Knights of Columbus building. When we checked the girls in yesterday one worker said they don't have a pool. They were going to get one(what ever that means)but they didnt, and they may use a slip and slide. Ok, call me old fashion, but I thought daycamp always involved swimming???? It has been so incredibly hot here, and is suppose to be 95 today. The counselors said they were keeping the girls inside all day because of the heat. I know my daughter was disappointed there was no swimming involved, and frankly I am too. Is this normal? She had fun yesterday, despite no swimming. Although, she was awful crabby when she got done. I think it was the combination of being outside for some activities and being tired.
I think that's very normal. It all depends on where a group is able to hold their camp. If you don't have your own facilities and you put a pool it it, you are at the mercy of whatever building/facility/grounds you can rent.
Even our GS sleep away camps don't always have swimming. It all has to do with the facilities and available lifeguards!
The girl scout camp near us, just built a new pool! It's the one I went to, as a kid, and they had a pool, then, too! Even at horse-camp, Emily got to go swimming. They went to the local pool, on a really hot day last summer, and this year, she planned her week, when there was a mystery trip and she got go to the Kalahari, in Wisconsin Dells. (lucky pup. The first in our family to ever go there!)
Very misleading,My DD would be frantic if I told her there was swimming and then there wasn't.I'm sure alot of people were attracted to the camp because of swimmming.
Ditto Kaye. Our day camps never had swimming before when I used to help in Girl Scouts.
I think it is normal, it just depends on where they can hold the camp. I still would have been a little put out since the form to register said to bring swim items. It makes it sound like there will be swimming. I am glad your dd still had a good time.
Our Camp Fire Girls day camp didn't have a pool, either. We did everything else (arts/crafts; nature hikes; cooking over a fire; building a fire; etc.) but never swam. Never missed it! But, if the form said to bring swim gear, I wonder why there was no swimming or even getting wet?
