Karen, my boys are headed your way...
their Dad (my X) is flying them to New Orleans in the morning... X is working there for 3 months. Instead of coming home for the week he decided to fly the boys down and show them around. They are going on a fishing trip and a swamp boat ride. You would think they had won the lottery they are so excited. It should be a pretty educational trip for them. Will be good for them too see the hurricane damage up close and personal. I have heard there are areas that still have not been cleaned up at all? New Orleans may never be the same after my 14yo and 12.5yo get too town. LOL
Sorry Conni, I *just* saw this..... Where are they staying? Have you spoken with them? Do they absolutely hate it? I say UGH to the swamp boat ride, although my sister took her son on one a few years ago and they loved it. ROFL It will definitely be educational. Tell them to go to Lakeview and the 9th Ward and east to St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes. It is BAD there. They can drive to East Jefferson/Kenner/Metairie to see how people are living where it was *not* bad............ you are right, some places are practically just as they were nearly a year ago. I have been hearing on the news the past few days, how in sold busineses that were pretty destroyed and never reopened, there are refrigerators that have NEVER been cleaned out and the rotted and decayed food in them is causing health issues for surrounding businesses.........
Oh that's ok Karen!! I actually left town for a few days after dropping them off at the airport and just got back home myself. I know you have had your hands full too! I will have to go catch up on the posts about Jen... Brad sent me a txt msg this morning and said they went fishing and had a blast. They are staying somewhere that has NO pool. So I am sure that is traumatizing for them. LOL I need to call them tonight and find out what else they have done. I am sure they will see the lower 9th ward up close and personal as that is where their Dad is working. He is repairing the motors on the pumps that pump out the flood waters... Fun job, not! I called him the other day and he kept saying 'HUH?' LOL He finally explained he was down in a pit underneath a big motor. ewwww... I will mention the other areas to them, that you listed above !! Thanks! Oh and PEE U too the old rotten frig's... Gross.
Well, stay off the phone, woman, let that man get those pumps repaired!!! ROFL We DEFINITELY need those pumps repaired! Your DH should take them over to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL for a weekend. The beaches are beautiful there. Actually, if they go that far, that could go to FL too.......It's only a 3 or 4 hr. drive from New Orleans. What else do they plan to do while they are down here in the armpit of the nation?
Ewww, on the fridges that weren't EVER cleaned out. I can't even imagine. I saw some of the unrepaired houses on an episode of "Ellen." That looked pretty bad, too.
Well, I talked to Brandon as they were driving down toward the lower 9th ward. He was saying 'ooohhhh myyyyy, that car is crinkled, that house is destroyed...' etc... So it is good for my boys too see the devastation. I tried too explain to him that, that was *someones* car and *someones* HOME that they lost. He said they were going shopping downtown today? Would that be the French Quarter area maybe? I dont know I have never been there. They are enjoying it. The fishing trip was a huge success. The swamp boat ride of course was the *coolest*. They got too hold a baby gator. YUK!!!! I am sure that will be the hi-lite of their trip. lol Nothing will top that.
If they are shopping downtown it is more than likely @ The Riverwalk or in the French Quarter. Glad they are having a good time - it is UGLY here these days!
Well........what have they done in N.O.?
Brad called yesterday afternoon and they were driving back to N.O. from Baton Rouge. I guess they spent the day at a water park and an amusement park until a thunderstorm came thru and rained them out. Brad said it was 101* !!!! Said the air was so thick he couldnt breathe. Of course, they had a great time! The day before they went down too the French Quarter area and also got too see Bourbon Street. They thought I would be mad. LOL They said they didnt even walk very far down that street and it got too dirty and nasty for them and they wanted too leave. LOL !! A drunk man walked by them and said 'Tell your boys Papa's a bad man'... I guess that freaked Brad (12.5yo) out. Little bit of culture shock. We dont have drunks anywhere around here on the streets (well, atleast not during the day when my kids would be out LOL ) We are pretty sheltered here in Arkansas. In fact, we live in a *dry* county. It's good for them to get out and experience something new. They are having a good time. They love spending time with their Dad.
They must have gone to Blue Bayou water park. Yes, there are plenty of drunks on Bourbon St. Bars are open 24/7, and alcohol consumption is at a high. And yes, it does get nasty down there, depending on what's going on in the way of tourists, festivals, etc. And yes, it STINKS to high heaven down there at times, particularly around Mardi Gras and during festivals, and in the summer, when there's a lot of garbage from the bars, etc. And everything is worse since Katrina. Your DS got to experience our *wonderful* humidity - the air that Pamt says you could *chew* - when it's hot and the humidity is high, the air is so thick and it's definitely hard to breathe. I'd be willing to bet they won't want to come back! LOL
Yep, they were at Blue Bayou. My oldest got a nice sunburn there last week. It is hot and miserable here...as always. I hate summer!! I'm not exactly a fan of Louisiana in general either. Anyway, glad that they are having fun. Wish you were with them, so we could finally meet!
