Children and Fireworks don't mix!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2006: Children and Fireworks don't mix!

Here's an article from Forbes, on a study done by study done by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Columbus Children's Hospital in Ohio.

edit - see the link that Dawn kindly created

Here are some quotes:

Between 1990 and 2003, approximately 85,800 cases of fireworks-related injuries in children were reported, and in 54 percent of the cases, the parents were right there, according to the study done by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Columbus Children's Hospital in Ohio.

The average age of the injured children was 11, and the majority -- 80 percent -- were male. Burns were the most common injury in 60 percent of the cases, and the most commonly injured body sites were the eyeball, face and hands.

Firecrackers caused almost 30 percent of accidents, sparklers about 20 percent, and aerial fireworks around 17 percent.

"Children who were injured while playing with fireworks themselves accounted for approximately half of the injuries," said study co-author Rachel Witsaman, a CIRP staff member, in a prepared statement. "Even more concerning was that one-fourth of injuries occurred to bystanders. This means that a child is at risk of injury simply by being near where fireworks are being used."

And, finally: "Parents should be advised to take their children to safer public fireworks displays, rather than allowing consumer fireworks to be used by or near their children," said study author Dr. Gary Smith, director of CIRP.

Note: This study only counts children who were treated in an emergency room or admitted to a hospital. It doesn't count children who might have been less seriously injured and not taken to an ER.

I think this is timely. Wish it had been available a couple of days ago, when more people would be on the site.

Adults and fireworks (well, plus some drinking) aren't much better... I was pretty sure our friends were trying to kill someone last night. LOL Anyway, thanks for the information, Ginny. I see WAY too many parents being careless with fireworks around their kids.

Nine injured in fireworks display

Bride-to-be recovers from burns in firework accident

This was the official city display, about 20 minutes away from here. People got hurt anyway. I'm not sure why, since I wasn't there. I think officials don't know why, either. It happened on Friday, and the bride-to-be, was supposed to be married on Saturday. It really stinks that she got hurt.
