Does anyone know how to choose the best Salmon?
My mom just got back from Alaska cruise. She asked me what I wanted from her trip and I said "salmon" So I have a freezer w/ salmon now. It is SOOOOOOOOOO good. I want it for every meal, and have had it 4 times in the last 3 days Now I don't want my stock to run out. I want to find out the best flavored salmon avail. Seems there are several choices, and which river it swims in makes a difference too. So I am wanting to do a comparison search to see if we can afford to have salmon in my freezer all the time. OH IT IS SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD! I waited 22 years for this fish! 22 yrs ago, I hated fish. A friends family traveled and caught a salmon. They brought it home for a family grilling. I fell in love and have longed for that flavor ever since. So far, no restaraunt has come close to the fresh flavor. This stuff my mom had shipped home is just what I was hoping for.
Well, I would find out where she had it shipped from and contact them!! Unless you live very close to the source, I would doubt that your going to find it in your local grocery store that would be as good as having it shipped in from a direct source.
There is an article in a recent Consumer Reports about seafood in general, and one of the things I remember is that wild caught salmon will generally have less risk of lead content than farm salmon (and also probably tastes better).
Wild salmon is great, but sometimes hard to find. We eat salmon almost every week so if you run out of ideas for cooking it let me know.
I also love salmon! Yum!
I LOVE slamon! Wish we could get the really good stuff here. When I go to Seattle or DH goes to San Francisco on business, we enjoy the salmon sooo much there! No tips...sorry...you just got me thinking about it. My best friend lives in Seattle and had the most wonderful salmon at her wedding. I pigged out on it!
I just saw something about that famous fish market in Seattle on the food network channel. They actually packed fish for a customer who was flying back home. I think it's good for 48 hours. I wonder if you could order from them online?
I wonder, Kiki. Vicki, as for purchasing from the same place my mom did, I certainly would. I just wanted to do some comparison shopping before I made any purchases. You just never know how the prices are until you look. My mom said the fish was not expensive, it was the shipping that cost.
Right now, fresh, wild caught alaskan king salmon is going for $10.99 at our supermarkets. If you are going to freeze it anyways, you might try Trader Joe's (if there is one near you), their frozen fish is flash frozen and it's usually pretty good.
Thanks Collette. I'll check on that. I've never heard of it. I might be able to find a fresh fish market locally as well. We live in FL so it's not like we are close to the Pacific ocean fish.
I'm in New England so I'm no where near it either, but most fish markets and some of the better grocery stores can get it delivered on a daily basis.
