Summer illnesses

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Summer illnesses

Is it possible to get the flu in the summer time?? I know it's really a respiratory illness. But this is what's going on: Last week Jen started early in the week with symptoms like a cold, after 3 days she got a horrible headache, then a fever and chills and body aches. She was sick for like 4-5 days total before the worst part of it set in. She spent all of Friday night through yesterday morning vomiting. Once that stopped yesterday, she started with diahrrea. I brought her some Phenergan for the vomiting, she couldn't keep anything down at all.

She had to miss school today, and they just started a new *massage* this week. Now she is coughing a lot, very congested, and has a very sore throat. To top this off, she's scheduled to have her mole surgery on Wednesday, and then her tonsilectomy on July 3. I had her call the ENT today and she goes in to see him Wednesday morning before her mole surgery, *just in case* she needs to be on antibiotics. Personally, I think she should reschedule the mole thing, but she's anxious to get it removed and find out if it's cancerous.

It seems like so many people I know though, have this thing in the summer with the fever and vomiting/diahrrea and headache, that lasts for several days.

Anyone else???

Yes, it's possible. It's been going around here for a few weeks. It starts with a bad headache and you feel like you are hungover. Then it gets worse from there. The people I know that have had it says it takes 4-5 days to even feel like you are among the living and then another few days to get back to normal.

One thing many of them said was they developed a sinus infection along the way. I'd say a trip to the doctor to rule out an infection or strep throat is in order.

I hope she gets to feeling better. Summer illnesses are the worst.

She is going to see the doctor Wednesday morning. She just called, and her temp is back up to 101. She's worried about missing class again tomorrow, and also on Wednesday, but that cannot be helped.

What about the Nile Virus? They say most people think they have the flu before they realize what it is. Has it been detected in your area this year?

Not that it is common here in FL, but we see a few cases each summer and there are ALWAYS warnings about Nile V and staying inside during peak mesquito hours.

Just took Taylor into the doctor today. She is so sick...runny nose, sore throat and just miserable. All she wants is to be held and watch Barney....I AM SO SICK OF BARNEY! LOL I just hope this stays a really bad cold, I doesn't turn into the flu that would be even worse.
So yes Karen, I think it's going around. I hope Jen feels better soon.

We have got the bad colds around here too. Faith has been sick for over a week now. I took her to the dr last week as her eye was having some icky stuff coming out. I thought it was pink eye. The dr said no pinkeye but was the sinus's pushing stuff up. Pretty gross LOL... Her ears were clear, and her throat was red. We got some prescription eye drops. She had the worst runny nose I have seen. Its getting better, but she is still so crabby when the motrin wears off. Also she had a fever on and off for days.
Now though, my husband and I have the sore throat and achey muscles...UGH... all this on the last week of school before summer vacation
Now me and

Thanks.....

Dana, no West Nile reported in our area *yet* this year........

She does have an appointment with the ENT in the morning, so if it's turned into something worse than viral, she will go on antibiotics.

Just seems strange, I always think of the flu as a *winter* illness, but that is what this seemed like.....

Update: Jen came by to pick up checks for the doctors' copays tomorrow (naturally! LOL). She asked me to look at her throat and, OMGosh, those tonsils have GOT to come out. They are huge, red, swollen, full of pits and pus pockets. Her glands in her neck are swollen. Tried to get in today to the ENT, but can't so will keep her appointment for in the morning.

Then, on the way home, an old friend of hers called and needed a ride, so she brought her home and went in for a few minutes. The girl's mom is a nurse at a local hospital and she took a look at her throat and pretty much had the same reaction I had. Told her to definitely keep the appointment in the morning, she has infection. Again.

AND she refuses to cancel the mole surgery. Hard headed kid.

She looks and sounds a lot better though, she's pretty much over the *stomach* part of that illness.

I remember when Jeff had his tonsils out and another set of tubes in his ears when he was 3, he was getting strep so often and ear infections so often, they kept him on antibiotics for several weeks prior to surgery.

I'm wondering if they are going to do this with her?? It just seems kind of *funny*, to have an older *child* who is getting sick so much. Looks like she's inherited my immune system! LOL I always expected my kids to have lots of sickness when they were young, but at a point, most of them outgrow it when their immune systems get stronger.

Let us know how she makes out at the dr this morning. I hope she is feeling better or else can get meds to help her. Sounds like she was pretty miserable!!

How is Jen feeling? I hope she is feeling better (((Karen & Jen)))

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 02:15 pm:

Thanks for asking. She is on Augmentin now. The ENT told her the reason her tonsils keep getting infected over and over again is due to the pits and scar tissue on them from so many past infections. He said that bacteria are just collecting in them, like little bowls. They HAVE to come out. Now we just have to keep her well enough to GET them out. LOL

She will be going for her mole surgery in an hour or so. Will let you know how that goes.

How did her surgery go??

By Karen~admin on Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 03:25 pm:

She is sore. LOL It went well though, the incision is only between 2"-3", not the 4" we were originally told to expect. The biggest problem she is having is, she is allergic to tape, just like me, and there is a bandage on it, plus a pressure bandage that has to stay on until tonight, and after she got home yesterday, her skin started reacting to the tape, itching and irritated. But she should be OK. She can take the pressure bandage off in a little while, and then she's supposed to change the dressing daily. I told her to use paper tape, which is not as irritating. Plus, she's not supposed to get it wet, so to shower, she is using masking tape to tape part of a garbage bag over it. ROFL
I think she goes back next Tues. or Wed. to get the stitches out, and hopefully they will have results in. Thanks for asking!

I'm happy to hear she's on the mend!!!
