Impact on Women

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2006: Impact on Women
By Kym on Friday, June 9, 2006 - 10:06 am:

Can you gals share with me any charities, organizations that have are benefiting women in crisis? My company currently sponsors Domestic Violence shelters, but I have learned the three VERY large similar companies are supporting DV as well, we'd like to find and "under supported" needed arena that we could support. I am in NO WAY saying the DV does not need all the support we cna give it, just looking to "spread the wealth" so to say!

TIA

Are you looking to stay in your state or does it matter. Does it have to be a Charity like Unicef or can it be a private charity?

What about overseas charities that help women being sold into the sex slave trade and that sort of abuse? That goes on all over in many countries, unfortunately.

Sandy, we are looking for a charity/organization that helps women specifically, our business is very geated toward enhancing women's lives. Private charity is fine as well, which may be better, when we started our DV program, there was not that much support from large businesses, but it has hit so we'd like to find a small under funded under promoted work.

Kate, that's very interesting, haven't thought about that, that would hit young girls as well. Thanks

Rape crisis centers, and teen pregnancy shelters (help pregnant teens finish school, get a job, and otherwise learn to be self-sufficient) are great causes that are often under-funded. HTH!

While I tend to think that there cannot be too much help going to domestic violence programs and shelters, I think Crystal's suggestions are both good ones. And, you might talk with the program people at the domestic violence shelters you are already helping to fund and find out what programs help the women they shelter find ways to move on in their lives. I know my church is part of a program providing shelter to homeless families with children, and this network works with a larger network that helps with job training, job placement, finding permanent housing, etc.

Just a suggestion, I have heard about this place before. It's called Meeting Ground & I'll post a link. It may be worth a look.

Thanks, Crystal, the rape crisis centers is something my staff is looking into, great suggestion. Ginny I hope you did not think I was saying too much was going to DV, it's an extremely important cause, we are just looking for other avenues that are not being as heavily funded as DV is now, one similar company to mine has donated over 2 mil last year to DV. Please don't mis understand me.
Sandy, what a great service they are providing, I think i'll dig deeper into that and see if there is a National group to do the same type of service.

Not for a minute, Kym, and I do understand why your company might want to find new places to put their money - just that there is always more need than resources for domestic violence shelters and programs - sadly.

You can search for charities here...

I went to justgive, what a great resource. Since my mom had a pain killer addiction problem, that led to her death, this has been a lingering thougth it my mind. So I found some information on truth/responsibility in prescribing drugs, I am going to look more into that. We have a large population of women addicted to pain killers, and other prescription drugs!
Thanks again for your help!

Kym, I just wanted to tell you that I think it is awesome that you are giving back. What a good example for your children! Kudos!
