Vacation's a go!
Dh got the beans planted and we are planning to hit the road on Saturday! Of course, there's rain forecast for Myrtle Beach all next week... oh well. We're just happy to get out of Dodge for a while! No one's packed, the laundry is piled all over, I don't have time for the last minute trip to Wal-Mart...but at least we're going! LOL Oh, and you ladies will appreciate this.. dh said he wasn't as crazy as I was about getting ready, to which I replied it's because you have a wife who is taking care of all the details! All you have to do is throw a couple of shirts into a bag and you're ready! He laughed and said that's true... At least my kids are at the (nearly) self-sufficient age, and I don't have to do much overseeing. And I'm lucky that dh packs his own bags! I've got several co-workers who say they pack for their dh! I can't imagine that... I have enough trouble figuring out what I need.
YAYYYY!!! Have a great time!!
Woo Hoo!!!!!!! Have a wonderful trip! A rainy day at the beach is better than a sunny day at home any day!
I'm sooo happy this has worked out for you!!!Have an awesome time.

Did you know at this is Biker's Week on at Myrtle Beach. I have a few friends and family that are leaving out ( DC) today and riding there bikes down. It shoudl be fine this is first time going, i've never been there during BW, but I've talked to folks on the phone and the noise is increadible, should be fun. Again hope you have fun, enjoy yourself.
Where in Myrtle Beach are you staying? This IS Biker's Week! Lots and Lots of Bikers! Maybe the rain will keep some of them down. Please e-mail me if you get a chance to... ealaney @ adelphia dot net without all of the spaces, you know... Please, please, PUH-LEASE e-mail me!!!!! I am so glad your vacation is still on, though!

My kids pack themselves and are good at it! I just pack for DH and me. I can do his clothes. He usually takes care of his toiletries, since he needs shaving supplies and contact lens supplies. Have fun on your trip! It's almost time for ours! I'm glad the weather cooperated!
So glad you are getting to go. Have fun!
Hi, Adena I'm not sure if your question was for me or for Janet. Actually I'm not staying in Myrtle Beach, S.C. I'm actually leaving in the early morning hours and heading to North Carolina where I will arrive Saturday Morning around 8 or 9am. But around 10:30 myself and a few cousins will be driving down for the day only and returning that night. I spoke with a friend from here that went down to S.C. yesterday. And I could here the partying going on in the background. But he said that they have toned the bikers down a lot because of a lot of accidents last year, I can recall one time he was down there and I was here home pregnant on the phone with him, and a young girl and guy where killed in front of him. The police are giving out ticket starting at $450.00 and up for speeding , and even tickets for making noises with you bike( not the regular noises that a bike makes) you doing tricks and making noise. So again I'm not sure whom your question was for, if it was for me or Janet.
Yeah, I just found out it's biker's week! Wish I'd known, but this is the only time we could go anyway. They should be gone by Tuesday, the locals tell me (I've been visiting a MB message board that is super for info). Also, we're staying at Dayton House, which has an absolutely NO MOTORCYCLES rule, which should help. It's OK--I doubt we'll run into anything too rowdy. DISCLAIMER: I realize that there are some very nice people who ride bikes, this is not in any way to be misconstrued as a criticism toward the part of the population who enjoy this type of transportation.
My question was for Janet! But glad that you have your info, too, DandJmom. I didn't know you were going to Myrtle, too! Glad you are staying at Dayton House. I knew they had a No Bikes Rule. That's where we stay. I think you'll love it! We do. I was going to suggest a MB message board for some info on this one. There are a couple of Biker weeks at Myrtle Beach, but this is the "rowdiest". I'm just glad that it won't take up all of your vacation. And if this is your first visit to Myrtle, please don't let it construe your opinion on it! I know a lot of residents of Myrtle Beach area actually plan their vacations for this time of year to get away from the area!!! But I think you guys will be fine. Especially staying at Dayton House. You'll have your pools and the beach hopefully without the problems. And I am not trying to be demeaning towards bikers in general at all. It is just a known fact that this Biker's week in Myrtle Beach, which is Atlantic Biker's week, which the Bikers' themselves have deemed "Black Bikers Week" is pretty loud, rowdy, and can be very unfamily oriented, to put it in kind terms. Most of the bikers are young, and come in on street bikes. There is also a Harley Biker Week, that is supposed to be very nice. And it is always on Memorial Day Weekend which the residents of Myrtle Beach have been trying to get changed for years because of families wanting to come to the area during that time for long weekends and can't due to this. But back to Janet, I am so glad that you guys are getting your vacation! I was so disappointed when I heard you may not go! I knew how upset we would all be, since we are leaving for Myrtle Beach (and Dayton House) in just a few weeks! I hope you have wonderful weather! I looked at a forecast, and it looks like just a small percent chance for several days next week! A lot of times in that area, you'll have a rainshower, and then in no time, it's gone! Also, it may be raining in one place, and you'll drive down the road, and it's sunshine there! Here's to lots of sunshine and warm water! Have tons of fun!
I wouldn't want to be in South Dakota, during the motocycle rally! That's way too many people for me! I'm glad we're going in 2 weeks and not the first week in August! Have fun!
Yea! I am so glad your vacation is on! It sounds like you will have a great time. I would love to go to Myrtle Beach one of these days.
We just got back a couple of hours ago, and after 2 days in a car, my brain is fried! But I wanted to post this quickie... If you are scheduled to go to Myrtle Beach over Memorial Day weekend, reconsider. We were at the tail end of the biker's week (thank God), and I just can't explain the experience very well. I was expecting Harleys and scarey ZZ Top-looking guys... but it was what the locals called "Black Bikers" week, and it was entirely a different situation. We got there Sunday night, and the streets were packed with what DH calls "pocket rockets" (the motorcycles you have to practicaly lay on to drive), gangsta rap, half-naked women and bad-looking dudes... Although the place we stayed at had a no bikes rule (Dayton House), the places around us didn't, and the beach is public. There were police everywhere (a good thing), and our hotel had sentries at the parking garage to keep people out. We asked where we could get supper, and they told us a lot of restaurants closed early, and that we'd do best to order a pizza, which we did. We stayed holed up in our room, watching the theatrics, the first night. It was incredible. There was just about no one in town who had a nice thing to say about the whole thing; they just rolled their eyes at it. They know it's a necessary evil for business, I guess. The upside to all of this was that by Monday afternoon, the streets were empty and everyone was gone. There were very few people on the beach or in the shops... we had MB practically to ourselves until Thursday afternoon, when people started arriving for the Fun in the Sun event. All in all, it was a great vacation, but I would NEVER have wanted to be there during bike week!
Ugh! That's what I figured it would be. But I'm so glad you didn't have to put up with it for long! Sounds like the rest of your vacation was great! I'm so glad! We leave on June 16 for our fun at Myrtle Beach and we'll be staying at the Dayton House, too!
Glad you had fun, Janet. I haven't been to MB since I was a kid, but those trips are some of my best childhood memories. Do you go shelling? Did you find any good shells??
Oh ugh. That is why we didn't schedule our South Dakota vacation during the big rally in Sturgis, in August! No thank you!
Adena, have you ever been there? Dayton House is really a great place to stay (although I haven't been anywhere else, so I don't have anything to compare it to!). We had an oceanview king...it had a bedroom, a kitchenette (fridge, stove, microwave, dishes, glasses, utensils, cooking pans and things, dish soap and towels), and a living room with a bed that folded down out of the wall, a table w/four chairs, a small couch, and a balcony that had four plastic chairs and a table. Each room had its own TV. It's not a new place, but it's clean and pleasant. The only thing was the parking. There's a garage, but if you have an SUV (like us), you can't use it. So we had to vie for the few coveted spaces on the ground floor, or park across the street, outside. We LOVED the fact that you could trot out to the beach in a few minutes, whenever you felt like it! Plus, one building had an indoor pool and sauna/whirlpool, another had an outdoor pool, lazy river... but we spent all our time at the "big" pool! LOL Have a wonderful time! I want to go back already!! BTW, we didn't find any really unusual shells, but that didn't stop dds from bringing home a bucketload anyway!
We took our first trip to Myrtle Beach last year. I spent a month on the internet looking and comparing different hotels and resorts and ended up with Dayton House. We were definitely not disappointed. We stayed in a King End Suite, Oceanfront. We are staying in the exact same thing this year. The kids wouldn't even let me look at another place. They loved the lazy river and the overflow pool. We have the room completely paid for already. We reserved it in January and made payments since then. Sent the last one in last month! Feels great knowing all the money we take is fun money and not hotel money! I really love the grounds there with the tables in the grassy area. Had they started the fireworks yet? Maybe not till June, I think... In June, on Tuesday, from the front of the Dayton House on the upper floors, you can see the fireworks from Broadway at the Beach. On Wednesdays, you can sit on the grassy area and see the fireworks from the 2nd Ave. Pier down the Beach. We get to stay for 8 nights this time and we are so excited! We scrimp and save so much though from January through June it's not even funny, though! But it's so worth every penny!
They started the fireworks at B@B when we were there...10 p.m. It was a spectacular show (and FREE)! The girls and I want to go back right now... at least next year, but I don't know if I can convince dh to go. He had a good time, but I think he wants to go west to the mountains. Like I said, I have no experience with any other hotel, but as a family-oriented place, Dayton House was just what we wanted. And you can't beat being right there on the beach! *sigh* Does the beach ever get really crowded?
My husband wants to go west to see the Grand Canyon and that. I only agreed to it when he has been at his job for ten years and gets three weeks paid vacation so I can still get my one week at the beach! Or once we have moved there (which I seriously want to do once I have completed my teaching degree) and no longer have to vacation there! Thankfully he enjoys it as much as we do! I have heard that we hit the beach right before the crowd starts moving in. That it usually gets a little more crowded the last week of June and really picks up around the Fourth of July and on till school starts back in August. But if anyone can go, you can get great deals from Dayton House and other resorts in Sept. on through the year. The closer you are to the Pavillion area, the more crowded it is. I love it where the Dayton house is located. Close enough to everything to be convenient, but far enough to be away from most of the crowds! Did you guys like Broadway? We didn't shop a lot, but we loved walking around the lake. And feeding those crazy fish and ducks!
You knew the Pavillion will close after this year, right? We went to that area, played arcade games and visited the Gay Dolphin (what a trip!), but didn't actually go on any of the rides. I kinda wanted to ride that 50 yr old roller coaster ( I used to love the wooden ones), but didn't get around to it. We loved Broadway! Yes, those ducks and fish are sure trained...I got a kick out of watching them shove each other out of the way to get food! LOL But the funniest thing was when the fireworks started (first time since last season) and boy, the ducks flew all over the place! Poor things...
Yes, my poor ds isn't quite tall enough for all the 48" rides yet, so he was thrilled to ride the Crazy Mouse roller coaster, and when you get to the top you can see the Atlantic. We rode that thing about 8 times last year! So we have to make one last trip to the Pavillion this year. I was shocked at all the rides in there! Last year we were in there forever and there were no lines. We had a great time. My dh and dd rode the wooden coaster, but I stayed back with ds that time. We actually didn't get to go in the Gay Dolphin last year, but want to this year just to see what all the hype is about. We also want to go to Captain Hook's behind Dayton House and golf. We didn't get to do that last year either. It looks like a great course.
Captain Hook's was actually our favorite course (we also went to Dragon's Lair at B@B and Mt. Atlanticus on 17). I can't remember the hole # on the Lost Boys course, but if you actually put the ball into the stream of water, it ends up as a hole in one! (I think it's the last hole) DD did it by accident and discovered the trick. The Gay Dolphin is just about as junky and eclectic as you can possibly get! Some friends told us to go there, so we did...it was so funny! I can't believe the stuff in there!
Thanks for the tip! I won't tell anyone but my little ds if he's having trouble and let him look like a pro! hehe! Everyone talks like The Gay Dolphin is the best store on the Strand! Guess we weren't missing anything last year!
