Colorado
I just booked my summer vacation! I am so excited. We are driving to Estes Park, CO. I have never been to CO. So anyone with the must do list for me? We are going the first week in June. I assume it will still be colder nights, but nice days? I am headed from TX...so anything is better than here!
We are going to colorado too! But Farther South, Durango Silverton area, if my dh can take another week off we'll head for Boulder and Estes have a great time, it's a great place
This is a topic for MrsHeidi. I believe this is her first love.
Dora couldn't be more correct... aaahhhh...I love Estes and you will too! I love everything about that whole entire state!!! I can't wait to move back. *sniff* The Stanley Hotel, freshly made taffy, and the cute shops on the main street are incredible. Although, my favorite is the Rocky Mountain National Park. Thunder Lake is awesome and the park rangers are SO nice. While we were by the Stanley Hotel, we had a moose that was taller than our SUV, walk in front of us!! I'll email a sorority sister of mine who was born/raised there. Her father is the town sheriff. Until then, here's the link for things to do: God's Country I'm going to Winter Park and Denver in early July! I'm STOKED! HAVE FUN!
We stayed at the Rocky Mts YMCA in cabins in Estes Park 3 times in the 70s. We loved it. Haven't been back since. I wonder if it's changed at all.
OOoh, have fun! I have never been to Colorado! You are going on vacation, right before we are and I CAN'T WAIT! We'll both be all anxious for our early June vacations to begin! LOL! We are going to South Dakota.
Dawn, no offense, but South Dakota? Eek. Mt. Rushmore is about it...is that why you are going there?
And Custer State park, and the badlands. devil's tower in Wyoming. I think we will be busy. We want to see bison and prairie dogs. There is a mammoth dig, that they built a building around and a little farm where we can bottle feed animals and even my teens are excited about that! Also, we are spending a night in De Smet, SD, to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead on the Sunday, of our trip. Sarah would like to take a drive on the needles highway. Scenic Byways I for sure want to take the wildlife drive, myself. I have all kinds of friends that LOVED SD! LOL! Besides, I just want to see some of the west! The farthest west that I have been in a car, is Rochester, MN and the cities (St. Paul/Minneapolis)! I want to see what is farther west! I rented Close Encounters of the Third Kind last night, just to see Devil's Tower!
Dawn, I love reading your posts! You seem like such a happy person and you sure seem to enjoy life. No wonder your daughters are seem so happy, too! And after reading Heidi's post, I want to see Colorado! Never been, but I know I would love that state. You must be so excited about your trip, Kaye!
Dawn i live 45 minutes from Devils Tower & go over to the Black Hills as often as we can. It is beautiful & you will have a great time. If you get a chance they have wonderful B&B's that serve awesome amazing home cooked meals. Deadwood is fun to just walk around & some of the casino's are neat to look at. In the Rapid City area there is a place called Bear Country that is fun to visit, you can drive through & get up close to buffalo, bear, wolves, mountain goats & so much more. Then you can go look at all the baby wild life. There is Reptile Gardens, just before you get to the tower there is a prairie dog town (they are so cute!). Spearfish, SD has a great park to have a picnic lunch & then you can walk through the fish hatchery. It is beautiful country & you are wise to come out before the Sturgis Bike Rally in August! If you are driving, once you cross the river into western SD, there is less traffic & people just get a little more laid back. Keystone, SD is very pretty, they have great buffalo burgers there. If you stay the night you can wake up & look right at the Presidents. There are a lot of interesting little hide a ways that can make your trip special. Laura Ingles Wilder's homestead is was very interesting to me & I loved the tour, wasn't what I expected. Going though the badlands, so many rolling hills of nothing, but it is pretty. Next time you should plan to go even further west into WY & go to Cody...wonderful museum! Thermopolis has a great dinosaur dig & the hot springs are really extrodinary. Then of course Yellowstone, which I am ashamed to say I have never been too. Colorado is also another great state to visit & it is very pretty. I think that every state has some thing great to offer & have a personal goal of visiting each state before I die...they make up the history of our country. I mean who would have thought that a state like WY would be the first to give woman the right to vote. Oh I almost forgot Dawn...you can also pan for gold in the Black Hills!
We are staying in a hotel in Rapid City. So, no waking up to see the Presidents. Oh well. We didn't have a fallsview room in Niagara Falls, either, but we were just a short walk away. We will be farther away in SD. That's okay. Rapid City just seemed to be in the center of all that we wanted to see. I knew about the prairie dog town by Devil's Tower. You can even see it on google earth! Google Earth Screenshots Wow, I'm getting really good at finding Devil's Tower and Mount Rushmore now! I remember the first time I found Devil's Tower, I was following the roads with a map on my desk. I didn't need the map this time!
