Can you tell me about the South Beach Diet?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2006: Can you tell me about the South Beach Diet?

Has anyone done this? I remember hearing great things about it from co-workers before I quit 2 years ago, but never really heard the whole plan. I'd like to try something different than I've ever done before. I've done WW for about 5 years and really love it, but I find that I'm always hungry on WW (always have been) and that I lose weight in the wrong places. (My tummy, which has always been small and flat anyway, and my boobs, which are also small!!) :) I can maintain easily on WW, but I need to try a different approach to target the hips!! I know that SBeach is somehow related to carbs.
Anyone whose done it, could you give me a brief summary of what you do/what it's about? I don't want to read the book unless it's something I even remotely want to do. Thanks a lot!!! :)

Here's an article on WebMD: http://www.webmd.com/content/pages/15/96038.htm It basically says it is a reasonably sound diet plan. It does warn about the possibility of dehydration in the early weeks, but says long term it is not unsound. Personally, I think WW is a much better plan, both short and long term, nutritionally. I suggest exercise will do more for your hips than diet.

Can you get the book from the library, just to check it out and see if it is something you want to do?

Thanks for the link Ginny. Yes about the library, but I just have 3-4 other non-fictions on my shelf right now. :) I was hoping to get an idea from someone about it.

I exercise 3-4x a week and have been doing that for years. I'm generally a small person, but got a little hippier with my pregnancy and I want to get control of it. WW just doesn't seem to get me there )after my initial 13lb. weight loss with it about 5 yrs. ago) AND I've always been hungry on WW. That's really been my only negative comment on WW...the hunger for me.

I knew SBeach was related to carbs in some way, but I thought (or was hoping) it would be healthier. I've read Atkins and don't agree with it, and I definitely won't do anything unhealthy, but just looking for a "possible" change. I've also read the Zone stuff and was definitely interested in it, but wasn't motivated at the time because I really didn't need to lose any weight. I've gained about 4 lbs. recently and am a little discouraged with WW at the moment. (No, I haven't been strict on WW, and that's why I've gained 4lbs., but I'm hungry for some reason!!) :)

Thanks for letting me ramble about it. I'll definitely check out the link. Just your mention of the dehydration thing bothers me though.

The article was VERY helpful Ginny - thank you!!

No, this is not for me. I've never felt like one person in a family could do such a low carb diet while the rest of the family doesn't. This article gave me a good overview and I think I will review my Zone book again or re-think my WW a bit. Your article answered my questions perfectly....I don't have to add a book to my "to-be-read" shelf. Thanks again!!
