Puppy help needed

We have a new puppy...Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (similiar in temperment of a border collie). We have never owned a dog before so we are at a lost with training. We've read the books and tried a few things. We're not having much luck with the following: -getting him to come -walking on our left side -stopping him from eating everything when outside, including rocks! Any ideas on how I can do this? Thanks ladies...you're the best.
No. I never had a dog! Sounds like fun though. Good luck!

Check with your vet or local SPCA for training programs. How old is the pup? I'll ask Scott to check in.
Our pup is 14 weeks old.
He's still very young but soon find an AKC approved puppy kindergarten (usually a few weeks) !!!!!!! Make sure they include the whole family. A class with other dogs and an alpha dog is good because that is the real dog world with other dogs and people. Do whatever it takes up front to ground him in discipline and order so you can love him for a lifetime. Otherwise they become pests and you want to get rid of them. Someone said this to us when we got a puppy. We actually did 2 cycles - worth every penny. Fourteen years later we are forever grateful!!!!!!! Also the Dog whisperer books and shows are good for getting your mind on the right track (doesn't replace puppy kindergarten).
