Work (Taking Time Off)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2008: Work (Taking Time Off)

So I haven't worked since I got pregnant with Nathan, 3 years ago. Before I got pregnant with him I took a pharmacy technician program and graduated. After that I worked shortly as a pharmacy clerk/ancillary (since I had not taken my state exam yet, I couldn't work as a technician). I enjoyed my work. Some days were ehhh but I knew the day I got behind the counter instead of working more on the cashier/insurance billing side of things, I would like it even more. I just noticed a job opening in the Naval Hospital here (I have always wanted to work there!) that doesn't require the certification, just the schooling. I really want to apply. I'm sure this would mean night, weekends, holidays or whenever they need me but I would love this opportunity. I keep holding back though because it's been so long. I don't even know how much I really remember, and getting hands on is really the only way to determine that. In an employers point of view, would they take into consideration my time off and that I might need to be refreshed? I wouldn't want to go in and have them expect a lot more of me than I remember. (Of course, if I even get hired.) I don't know what to do. :(

Go for it... it can't hurt. I have a spotty work history because I have taken time off at various times with the kids, but I usually just explain that to the person doing the interview. You could mention the possibility of taking a refresher, if they desired it, to show you are willing to make that effort. Three years is NOT that long, and I'm sure it will all come back to you. The longer you wait, the harder it will be, too. Be honest, but CONFIDENT... most employers are more concerned with attitude than anything else, and will have patience with the "right" person. Good luck.

If you don't try, you end up exactly where you are now. If you do try, you may end up with the job, or exactly where you are now. At least the second one offers an option! Why not go for it?
