School Lunch Ideas

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2008: School Lunch Ideas
By Mrs_B on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 - 12:21 pm:

Kaitlyn only eats lunch at school on Wednesdays because that is their extended day, the rest of the week they are out at 11:30. I have tons of snacks, fruits and veggies to put in her lunch bag but i'm always stuck on pb&j sandwiches as her main food. I need more ideas. She's got to be getting bored with it. Today I changed it up and did a pb and banana sandwich. (She loves those!) I don't do lunch meat because I don't want it to taste bad by time she eats it, with the meat, cheese, mustard and mayo sitting out all morning. I just have no idea what to do! Suggestions?

There was just a post about this a couple of weeks ago. Great suggestions were posted. Scroll down. :)

Just three threads down on the Parenting board is a whole slew of ideas...good luck! I think it would be so much easier if humans didn't have to eat!

Cool, thanks! I'll check there. :)

Also - I have some disposable ice packs that I put in my son's lunch box. He brings them home, but if he threw one away by accident it wouldn't be a big deal. This way his lunchmeat stays fresh and I can send in things like yogurt.

I do the ice packs too. Maybe I will try lunch meat? I guess just the thought of it sitting doesn't sound so great. LOL

You could do lunch meat and then include packets of mayo or something? Sometimes the mayo makes things squishy by lunch time.

Lunch for the little ones is early, so the sandwich isn't really sitting that long. I don't put a ton of mayo on, just enough for flavor.
Most little ones really can't squeeze the mayo on for themselves.. If K can, then go for it.

When my kids got to middle school and beyond, they didn't want to carry a lunchbox/bag anymore, so that's when I stopped using the ice packs. Emily eats lunch around 11:30am everyday. Her ham or turkey/cheese/mayo sandwich has been unrefrigerated for 4 hours by that time and she is still alive and well.

I took sandwiches too, that were meat and mayo or meat and butter, that sat from breakfast until lunch, without a refrigerator or an ice pack and I'm still here, too.
