Ohmygosh!!!
Okay, going anon to protect the innocent! lol Some may figure out who I am anyway. Dh and I ran into oldest ds's math teacher today in the grocery store (ds is a freshman). I introduced dh to him since I'm the one who deals with all the school stuff. We talked for a few minutes and went our separate ways. A minute later math teacher catches up with us and says, "I have to tell you this story about something that happened in school the other day because it's funnier than h3ll! I've been telling everyone, just not telling them the kid that was involved." I said, "Don't tell me--it's my kid?!?" He said, "Yeah, but it's not bad." (Thank you, GOD!!!) He said, "You know how we had parent/teacher conferences Thursday night. Well Friday was a chili cookoff at another high school in the district and I was entering. I went home after conferences and threw everything together in the crock pot and threw it in the fridge to take to school with me Friday. So Friday morning your son is in my first hour class. About 20 minutes in, he comes up to me with this little baggie and says, 'Mr. L, what's this?' Well, it was pot, but I didn't want to tell him that so I said, 'Oh, that's the oregano for my chili! I must have dropped it. Thank you for bringing it up to me!'" He then said he took it to the principle after class, but he thought about putting it in the chili! lol I told him that I probably wouldn't have known what it was either. He thought I was kidding. He laughed, noticed I wasn't and said, "You're being sarcastic, aren't you???" Nope. Never btdt. Dh on the other hand worked on a drug task force for 3 years as part of his career so he'd have known. Okay, I'm not thrilled there are drugs in my son's school, but I'm not naive enough to think there aren't (especially since his school is a bit different than regular high schools). I'm glad he didn't know what it was (he wouldn't have faked it--he's very real about most everything, honest to a fault at times) and I'm glad the teacher was quick on his feet and believed my son. It made his day, anyway! I becha the kid that's missing his pot isn't too happy, especially since I'm sure it was turned over to the police. There won't be locker checks because they have no lockers. I wonder if a drug dog will be patrolling the hallways??? I guess for now, drugs isn't something we have to worry about. Good thing--we have enough to worry about! lol
Anon, I agree, it would be naive to think there were not drugs in any school today - what a shame. I wonder, though, if it would be better for the teacher to speak with your son privately and tell him it was pot, so that your son at least knows what he's looking at if someone offers him some "oregano". That kind of naivete can be risky. And, how nice that your son (a) really didn't know and (b) took something he didn't know about to a teacher. Signs of good parenting there.
Ditto Ginny.
