5-day cone:
gustav

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 04:09 pm:

Not that I want my FL moms to get this one........but I don't like where it's heading.......so far.........LOL

By Annie2 on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 04:18 pm:

Fay was okay for us. Lots of rain but not as bad as inticipated. It actually rained more Sun night than Sat. They forecasted this one might be a Cat 3 by landfall. UUghh, I have plywood for the windows but to supply up it costs money. I don't have the funds right now to spend on a storm that may or may not come. I'll be watching this closely.

By Mom2three1968 on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 04:59 pm:

Oh boy....

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 06:13 pm:

Annie, ditto about the money to get supplies! We don't have plywood for our windows, can you believe that?! Never have had it.

I am sure it's the same where you are - this place goes into panic mode once we're in a 5 day cone. They are real quick to order evacuations in my parish if it even looks like it might get close. I REALLY don't feel like doing that again. But *if* a Cat 3 was heading this way, I'm outta here - we live one block off the Mississippi River, and they keep talking about *the big one that will come up the mouth of the river*. Just wouldn't take the chance. So we'll wait a few days, see where it's projected to land, if it's here, we will make reservations in 2 different directions.

Odd thing - in 2005 when Katrina was first supposed to hit you guys, DH was actually in Ft. Walton taking care of business at one of his stores there. He was driving home the morning of Aug. 27, thinking he was running from Katrina. By the time he got home, I'd already made reservations in Little Rock & Memphis and cleaned up the yard. He had no clue the course had changed. 12 hours later, we were on the road to Memphis. LOL

Today, he is in Birmingham till Thursday. HE called ME earlier and said *check the National Hurricane Center site, I have to go into a meeting, just go check it out*. UGH! I hope this doesn't turn into a Labor Day event for any of us.

Me either. Especially since our house that burned is....almost ready. The insurance company would love a tree falling on it now. Man, we had like 5 years here with nothing since Ivan and now....lookie we got pounded by Fay and now this one. Yuck.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 08:40 pm:

Will keep all of you, in my prayers!

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 09:41 pm:

Keep us posted, you are all in our thoughts.

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 10:01 pm:

Hey, it could go east to FL or west to TX or Mexico, or anywhere in between, at this point. But, anyone who lives on the Gulf Coast will tell you that when they show your area in that cone, you start getting nervous.......

We are actually making reservations tonight.....*just in case*........

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 10:24 pm:

I would be nervous, if I lived down there! LOL!

By Kaye on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 10:51 pm:

LOL dawn...i'm nervous. We just had a bad bad storm today, we have had so much rain, we can't take a hurricane. If it hits houston it will be BAD, we are already too wet!

By Dramamamma on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 11:17 pm:

I agree Kaye, we got hit pretty bad up here today too. Guess we better keep an eye out on it. I didn't even realize there was a possibilty until late this afternoon.

By Kaye on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 07:48 am:

Christy did you see where the tornado hit? That was right as my kids were getting home from school, they released them anyway, but you could feel the uncertainess of the weather. We got hail and had the whole crazy wind thing. Scared the poop outta me!

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 08:35 am:

I didn't watch the news yesterday, will have to read about it online. Evidently you guys had worse weather than we did, ours was bad but no tornados. My mom DID comment yesterday evening that it was tornado weather, wonder if she's read today that it was for real.

By Tink on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 06:20 pm:

How are things looking currently? I hope everyone stays safe and sound.

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 07:32 pm:

Well, as expected, people in the New Orleans are freaking out.....LOL They are already talking about evacuation, etc. and bussing some 30,000 people out of the city who have no means to get out themselves.

Current 5-day cone:
gustav

A lot will depend on the high pressure system that is coming from the north - if it moves south towards us, Gustav will move east towards FL. If the high pressure system moves east, then Gustav will move more in our direction.

Obviously, still too early to tell. I have such mixed feelings about these 5-day cones this far out. On the one hand, you start to get things together and make plans. On the other hand, you just stress about it for days. DD (Jen) is stressing in a HUGE way. She said she and her b/f can't evacuate, they have 4 Old English Bulldogs, and not a car large enough to carry them all in, and nowhere to go. However, they are living about the same distance west of me as I live from the city, so they should be good there. Told her she can always come with us - we've made reservations in Huntsville, AL.

Went to the pharmacy to pick up refills on some meds today and it was WILD. The girl told me they will probably be there till 11 tonight filling Rxs. Said they had filled over 1000 today alone, and expect tomorrow to be worse. I'll have to be back there tomorrow with some new ones too.

My biggest worry right now is finding gas to even leave here. After all the rain the last couple of weeks, a lot of local stations have water in the main gas holding tank. Several stations in my area - including the 2 where I normally get gas - have water in theirs, and numerous people have had to have their cars towed because of it.
