Any fire fighters in the house? A question...

Does anyone know if fumes from Rid (lice shampoo) could set off a carbon monoxide detector?

Friends visited last week and called today to inform us one of their kids has lice. I checked my kids and found evidence. :( Ug! Off to the store! After applying Rid, not far from the detector, our carbon monoxide detector went off. I had the kids run outside while I reset the detector to see if it was malfunctioning. It went off again after the reset. I unplugged it and removed the battery and turned on the bathroom exhaust fans and then went outside. After about 15-20 min. I went back in the house, plugged the detector back in and reset it. It hasn't gone off since, so I assume that means everything is OK.

The detector is about a year old and this is the first time it has ever gone off. The only thing different is the use of Rid shampoo. Could the fumes have been strong enough to set it off?? My clothes dryer was also on at the time and it's running again now, but wouldn't the detector go off again if that was the issue? I don't want to call the fire department for a false alarm. As I mentioned the detector is no longer going off and is now reading zero.

I have no clue. My DH use to be a fire fighter, but I don't know if he would know that answer. A quick call to the firestation wouldn't hurt if it happens again, but as long as it's reading zero now, I wouldn't worry about it!

Have you changed the battery recently? It may need a new one. Otherwise, I'd say call and ask. Like Rayanne said, it can't hurt. I have three friends (mom and two youngest of four kids) that came very close to dying 3 years ago from carbon monoxide. It's not something to mess with. We have a member of this site that lost a couple family members, too. Please call and ask.

Called the Fire Dept. non-emergency # and explained the situation. They said it was probably a low battery.

Thanks, ladies.

I'm not sure why you are posting anonymously. This doesn't strike me as the kind of sensitive issue for which anonymous posting is supposed to be reserved.

I think she is using the anonymous feature because she asked about lice shampoo...

Yes, Luvn29 is correct.

Ginny, I didn't want to broadcast on the Internet that one of my kids has lice.
