Cruising While Pregnant

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2008: Cruising While Pregnant
By Rayanne on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 07:34 pm:

I am going on the Disney Cruise in September, and will be 20weeks along. I have asked my doctor if I would be ok to go, and she says that I will be fine, and will have a blast. Friends of ours are telling us not to go because usually pregnant women get more sea sick. I am so confused as to what to do, so I thought I would turn to all of you. Have any of you cruised while you were prego? How was it? Any suggestions if we do decide to still go to keep me comfortable? TIA!

never cruised while pregnant...but my dd gets horribly carsick all the time. When we did our vacation to Prince Edward Island, it was a 650 mile drive (one way). I bought dramamine, but dh wanted me to try the sea bands. I did, and never opened the dramamine, it worked like a charm for her. I couldn't believe it.

Well, I wouldn't miss the cruise if my life depended on it...but I've been wanting to take a cruise for yrs. lol I would ask my doc if there is a sea sick med that I could take while on the cruise.

There are stabilzers on the ship that make it so it doesn't rock much. The bands work great, as do ginger drops.
I would NOT miss a cruise because you are pregnant. If you were having complications, yes stay home. Otherwise don't go by hearsay, just be prepared for IF you get seasick (wrist band, ginger drops)

Many people use the patches behind the ears, which seem to work well. I would go, you are not early (therefore still at risk), and not late (possible labor), so it is the PERFECT time to go. And cruises would be a great vacation for pregnancy, since there is a ton of yummy food available all the time, and it's a very relaxing way to travel. Since the doc (who went to medical school, and knows pregnancy inside and out!) cleared you, don't let anyone talk you out of it, you will have a GREAT time!!!

Ditto Conni. LOL You have a number of options for seasickness.

The patches are used by a LOT of people. Also, you can ask your doc for a prescription for Zofran - works GREAT, and safe to take while pregnant. I also have the wrist bands, they help some. Ginger also helps. 2 years ago we were on a cruise and the weather was bad on several days so there was a lot of rocking/rolling. I had 3 sessions of acupuncture onboard (expensive though!) and it helped a LOT.

Phenergan works great but will put you to sleep. Dramamine also puts me to sleep.

When you're inside your cabin or another enclosed area onboard and start to feel seasick, very often going out on deck and breathing slow and deep and focusing on the horizon is all it takes to ease your seasickness.

Check with your doc about the patches - they may or may not be the best option for you while pregnant - my sister and others I've known or met use them, and effects vary from person to person. Some say their equilibrium was temporarily affected when they first put them on and particularly after they stopped using them. One or two didn't like them, and all the others swear by them. The Rx for Zofran is a really easy fix, and it works immediately and you don't have to take it unless you need it. AND it doesn't make you sleepy!

I see pregnant women on every cruise I go on. And you might not even feel seasick at all. Go on your cruise and have a WONDERFUL time.
