Log homes
Unless something goes bad wrong or we find something really bad wrong during the inspection, we will be buying and moving into a log home that is about 16 years old. The home has been empty for about a year so we have some work to do but mostly cosmetic. Painting and flooring mostly and landscaping. We fell in love with it from the road and it got better everywhere we turned. But what I want to know is...does anyone live in a log house? Is there anything that I should know that I may be over looking? Can you recommend any websites or books or mags that would help me in decorating? I've been googling, but I'm not really finding what I want to find.
No help here but enjoy your new home!
We used to rent one from a friend every winter for skiing and snowboarding. It was beautiful. Hope the inspection goes well.
This site has a ton of information Peak to Prairie and this one has a Guide to Log Home Inspections Guide to Log Home Inspections There are some really great magazines devoted to log homes, which have a lot of info in them. See if these sites help!
I hope it goes well with you!
I was given permission to have the water and power turned on for the inspection. It looks even better and I'm more excited now that I have seen all of it in the light. Thanks for the websites. The sites I had found seemed to be mostly advertising or too technical. I need "Log Homes for Dummies"!!!! And I want a practical book on decorating a log home. I want to be able to use most of my current furniture although I would like to buy a few new pieces. And my mom died a month ago and my brother wants me to come get my "CEDAR BEDROOM SUITE" that was a gift from my folks when I was 10. It will be beautiful in this house. Side note: I am so excited about this house and it is making me miss my mom even more. I keep wanting to call her and tell her about stuff in the house and then it'll hit me that I can't. But buying this house has me more excited than I have been in a while. I'll try and hit the bookstore when I go pick up dd from school. Okay I am officially rambling. Sorry.
It has always been a dream of mine to own one someday, congratulations. Have fun decorating and all that fun stuff. You'll have to post pictures!
Debbie, is your log cabin in Tn ,too ? When our son got married, they had the wedding in a log cabin in Gatlinburg. It was breathtaking, over looking the mountains!! I'm very sorry about the loss of your mother
WE CLOSED ON IT TODAY! I am so excited that I am just about to pop. Sorry, Wanda. I missed your post. It's only about 5 miles from where we live now. But it is on 4 1/2 acres and has a bunch of amenities. It's been empty a year and we got a great deal on it. By the way, did I mention that I'm excited??? I love this house. I felt like I was home the first time we pulled up into the drive way. It's not a cabin really. It's log on the down stairs and frame on the upstairs. This feels like MY home even though we've lived in our current house for 18 years.
This is very cool... Enjoy.
Years ago, when my X and I were married, he wanted to build/buy a log home. We actually looked at some models, and honestly, some of them were spectacular. Most people hear *log home* and think of a little cabin in the woods. SO not the case. You can leave your inside walls as they are or sheetrock/paint them. The advantage to a lot home is that due to the fact that it's LOGS, you have great insulation! Enjoy your new home!
I know nothing about log homes, but congratulations!! Sounds so exciting!!
I would love to have a log home...maybe in the mtn's...in Colorado or New Mexico one day. (I'll need to win the lottery first tho) I am very happy that it all went well for you. Congrats!!!!! When do you move in?
we rent one in Maine from a friend of dh's for ski season. I love it. I can feel your excitement by reading your posts. Have fun decorating!
I was working there today and two old guys stopped by. One to tell me that he lived on the farm behind me and the other offered to bush hog. He said the water guy had called and told him I was asking. I figured if anybody would know anything the water co guy would and he did. They were both very sweet. The guy who has the farm behind me gave me a bunch of history of the place. It is not a kit home. The logs were milled by the original owner/builder's brother at his saw mill. Every log has a piece of rebar thru it to hold it in place. He said my house was built real good and wasn't going anywhere without a fight. He told me a bunch of other stuff that was pretty cool. He said he was glad he could go home and tell his wife that they finally gotten some good neighbors moving into the house. (It's been empty over a year.) Have I mentioned that I love this house?
