Might be a silly question, but...

...when you move, do you take your baking stuff like flour, sugar, etc.? Mine are mostly in plastic canisters, so I wondered? If it's bagged, I wasn't planning to move it.
???

Thanks:)

I take ALL of my nonperishable food. You will spend so much money when you move on little things like extra wastebaskets, new shower curtains, cleaning supplies, etc. that every little bit of money you can save the better.

I would take everything....why spend money needlessly replacing things?

By Enchens on Sunday, August 3, 2008 - 10:32 am:

Ditto. Take it all. It saves you a trip to the grocery store as well.

Yes, take it all. Put things in sealable plastic bags. Either put the canister contents in the plastic bag, wash the canister and put the bag in it - that way the canister is clean when you unpack; or, put the canister with contents in a sealable plastic bag (Ziplock and I think Baggies has 2 gallon bags). We moved a lot the first 10 years of marriage, and I learned to use unprinted newsprint (you can buy it at a stationary or school supply store) to wrap breakable dishes, and then put them in sealable plastic bags (as many dishes as would comfortabley fit in a bag), and the same with tableware. That way things were clean and didn't need re-washing at the other end, which they do if you use regular, printed and inky newspaper.

This is a good time, by the way, to check expiration dates on canned and non-perishable foods and use judgment about discarding stuff. The only good thing about moving, for me, is that I had to mercilessly sort my stuff and get rid of things that I really didn't want any more and certainly didn't want to move.

I moved it all! LOL! Hence, why the movers put kitchen misc, on ALL of my kitchen boxes and I knew were NOTHING was, especially my Kitchenaid Mixer, which was heavy and they put it at the BOTTOM of one of the tall kitchen boxes. It drove me nuts and probably motivated me more, to get those boxes undone, so I could find it.

When we first moved to Sheboygan, since "movers" had packed us, and not me, they put all the kitchen stuff in those tall boxes, and then when we moved, since there wasn't that much room, in that small kitchen, they stacked them on top of each other and I couldn't move them, without help, so I had to wait until the weekend, when Gary was around to help me, before I could get those unpacked. We ate out a lot.

As much work as it is, to pack, I was a lot less frustrated on the other end, when we moved here, because I knew where I put stuff and I labeled boxes far better than that group of men, that packed me, when we moved to Sheboygan 15 years ago! As I unpacked 15 years ago, I really grew to hate the word, "MISC!"

The only time I had to give away or not take perishable food, open bottles of shampoo, cleaning supplies was when I was moving out of the country. Save everything...Ginny has some great suggestions on how to do so.

Thanks for the suggestions! I agree on spending the extra money...moving is so expensive!! I just thought there was some reason I *shouldn't* take the bagged things. Great advice. Thanks!!

We gave away perishables and opened containers of stuff when we were military otherwise, take it all!
