Another foster dog that is :)

I own 2 dogs, and also volunteer with an all breeds doggie rescue group. I started doing foster care for dogs about 2 yrs ago. The first 3 dogs we had, got adopted in 3-4 months...We have had "Ashley" for 18 months now :)... I think Ashley really likes us LOL.. She is a black and tan coonhound. Apparently hound dogs have a bad rep, I dont know. She is as sweet as can be though.
Well I ran into one of the head ladies of the group at the walk in doggie shot clinic. She had no idea I would be there. They just pulled a dog from animal control that was due to be euthanized :(...an older girl who looked so sad. She asked if I would foster her just for a couple weeks while another man would take her(Other man already had 2 fosters). I always said one foster at a time. I said "sure, she is older, calm, quiet"..Well we took Maisy home and after one day I told lady from the group I would like to foster her completely..She said "AOK"

How can people do this to dogs??? She is medium sized, so VERY skinny...Faith keeps telling me her bones are sticking out :(....

She is totally housebroken, if you show her a treat, she sits...she doesnt bark, she gets along with other dogs, and my kids. The noise and activity level in this house does not bother her in the least..When you pet her, she lays her head on your lap...

Animal control said she was a stray? How could you do that to a dog, who is so nice? It is obvious she came from a family, as she has total house manners...They think she is between 7-9 yrs old. Her bottom front teeth are totally worn down. I dont know how that happens??? She is heartworm positive, but the group takes care of that(money wise). I just take her to and from her appts. I am looking at her as she sleeps on the doggie bed on the floor. So sweet...and so sad that somebody just let this dog go.It is almost like she looks relieved to be inside a loving home where somebody is taking care of her..

So now I am the proud owner of 2 foster dogs:)...

Jackie, Scott and I were picking up his cat from the vet yesterday evening when a woman walked in with this absolutely gorgeous Pomeranian. I wasn't sure it was a Pom at first, because I haven't seen one for years, so I asked, and she said yes, a Tri-color Pomeranian. This little boy has a perfect mask, beautiful coat, wonderfully curled and fluffy tail, a great smile and very friendly nature. She told me he is a rescue dog - he was found chained to a crate, with a rope around his neck so tight that, two years later, he still has a scar when you push his fur back.

I agree - I will never, never ever understand how people can do that. The dobie my mom brought with her when she moved in with me had been abandoned when his owners moved, tied to the fence in the back yard and just left. He was a wonderfully sweet dog. All but two of my mom's cats were rescues (2 were the offspring of rescues); she must have rescued 35-40 cats in the 10 years before she moved in with me. Plus all the strays she would entice with food into cages, take them to the SPCA for neutering, and release them when they had recovered.

That is incredibly sad. :( When I worked at the vet, we often got newborn kittens left at our doorstep when we first arrived in the morning. Sadly, half on them always ended up dying from flea anemia. I'm glad I didn't witness too many abuse cases while working there. I wouldn't have handled it well. I was the one always picking up strays off the road and boarding them at our facility overnight until we found their home or animal control picked them up.

I remember one little Chihuahua mix "Stimpy" that I sort of rescued. There was something about him that I fell in love with so I fostered him for about a month, in the mean time bringing up his weight (he was severely underweight), getting him neutered (with a descended testicle, poor guy) and getting him caught with with vaccines. I took the whole bill myself and found the perfect home for him. I was doing it out of the kindness of my heart and nearly started crying at work when the couple who adopted him brought him in for a check up. They also brought me a thank you card and a goodie basket with pampering stuff. I know to this day he is getting spoiled and pampered by them. It makes me smile.

:( So sad. I don't understand, either. Jasmine was picked up as a stray, also. She wasn't potty-trained. We got that wonderful task.

I hate how some people treat animals.. it is really sad.. And to think there are so many people like me who would love to have a dog but can't due to the fact that my youngest DD can be really mean to animals and I just won't risk that.

Jackie, I'm so glad there are people like you! Maisy sounds so sweet, and I'm sure she is most grateful to have your love.

Lara and I go to out local Cat House to spend time with the many cats and kittens. The ladies were saying they are having an influx of abandoned cats due to the many forclosures. People just leave them locked up inside the house. They brought one in this week that needed daily medication. It's really sad.

I would love to foster animals but I know Lara and I would get too attached. I wish I was more like you, Jackie! I would like to help somehow.

Jackie, you are "working in God's orchard" as my gynecologist says. People like you who provide aid, comfort, love and a second chance to these little critters, is someone very special.

Poor Maisy. She must have been scared to death. Imagine not being wanted and at death's door. I'll bet that she is MOST grateful that you came along, and just when you did. Maybe she belonged to elderly people who died and the person's kids tossed her out. Who knows? They all have a story, but they can't tell you. Maybe her teeth got worn down from trying to chew her way out of somewhere.

I was at the vet with one of my guys last week and the animal control officer carried a case of Science Diet canned food out to her truck. Then she walked a pitifully skinny, ragged looking shepard mix out to her truck as well. I went out to talk to her while we were waiting our turn. I asked her what her story was. She said that she had been left behind by a family who moved away and "assumed" that "someone" was feeding her. Of course, no one did. She, too, has bones sticking out everywhere and a skin infection. The officer said that she will be rehabbed and then put up for adoption. Thank goodness there are still people like you who care.

A few months ago we had to get rid of our dog. My oldest son has allergies. They did'nt use to be very bad and over the counter meds would help, but it eventually got to where the meds would'nt help. He couldn't get around her without having an attack, so we had to do something. I did'nt want to take her to the "pound" they put them "to sleep" after they are there for so many days. We put ads in the local paper and had no calls. I got in touch with the Humane Society and they would take only small bred dogs, thank goodness she was a chihawawa (sp) mix. So they sent a foster parent for dogs to pick her up. They said they would find a home for her and that they NEVER put them to sleep, that was what I wanted to hear! I was still sad about having to let her go, but I felt good knowing that she was being taken care of. People who foster animals are great people!!

I'm sorry, Mara, but it sounded like she couldn't stay with you, anymore.

I still don't know Maisy's story.. All I know after having her for almost a week, I can say she is one of the sweetest dogs who has ever been to my house :)

The first day and half, she hung out in her crate. I left the door open, and put a nice soft "Finding Nemo blanket in there"..I guess she was unsure of herself then. Now though, she hangs with the other dogs, found herself a comfy spot on the sofa, plays ball with my kids, follows us all around the house. She knows the word "sit", and "come"..I look in her mouth and see her front top teeth and bottom front teeth gone, and it breaks my heart :(...

How does that happen???She is house trained(well have 2 accidents in a week), and I still have not heard her bark.

I feel so bad for her. I know I should be happy, that the doggie rescue group , rescued her from Animal control. I know I should be happy that she looks happy being in a nice ac house during this hot summer, and she has food to eat and a nice place to sleep..

I often find myself just petting her and hugging her and telling her Im sorry for the life she has had in the past.
