Quilts and shrinkage
I'm shopping for a new quilt for Natalie's bedroom. Of course I'm in love with PB Kids - always my first choice! I still might go with one of those. I know from experience they don't shrink. I have one quilt from Target however that shrank quite a bit after the first 2 washings. I've seen a couple of girl quilts at jcpenney.com that I really like also, but are much cheaper. I know they will probably shrink up, so I'm wondering if I should get a full for a twin bed to allow for shrinkage? I don't want it too look too big for the bed, but I don't want it to look too short after a wash either. Has anyone bought a full for a twin bed and been fine with the way it hangs on the bed? I'm not sure what to do. I may have to suck it up and go with PB. They are so soft, wash so well, don't shrink, and last forever, so it's been my experience that you do get what you pay for there.
We have a king quilt for a queen bed, and it looks fine. Last year I bought new bedding, but I knew dh and I were going to buy a bigger bed next year....YEA!! I didn't want to have to wait to buy bedding, we really needed it. So, I got the bigger size. It looks just fine, and not too big for the bed.
Have bought several quilts from JcPenny over the years. None have shrunk.
I buy one size larger (unless that is so much larger it drags on the floor) because I like having the extra on the sides for when I turn over. I sleep in a double bed, and if I buy double-bed blankets/quilts, when I turn over I often have a gap that lets the cold air in. Never had a shrinkage problem but, because I am buying for adult beds, I tend to go to Lands End or to buy more top-line products because I find they last longer and look good much longer, which balances out the higher original cost.
My bed needs a new blanket. It's plenty long enough for the sides of my queen-size bed, but it's not LONG enough. My mattress is so high, that I barely have any blanket to tuck in, at the bottom, and it's always coming undone. I like my blankets up over my head, in the winter, so it's a problem. I like the blanket on the back of my head, like a hat, but my face is always showing. I think I might have to try a king-size blanket. Maybe that would work better.
Dawn, too funny! My favorite sleeping position is lying on my tummy with a pillow over my head, with my face showing. Deanna, I would go with the PB quilt so you do not have to fret about shrinkage. We have bought several from them and I pleased with their quality.
Yvonne- For this particular quilt at Penney's, all of the reviews say that the quilt shrank almost 6" all the way around! I know that my Target one did, although I don't think that much. She currently has a comforter from Penney's on her bed, and it also shrank quite a bit after the first wash (which was dry cleaning). I'm thinking I will go with a full if it's from anywhere other than PB. Thanks for the input.
Wow. I don't think I've ever had a quilt shrink. 6" is quite a bit!!! My quilt is from Kohls. Sarah's is from Kohls. Emily's is from Penney's. I need to keep my eye out for a blanket that is 96" 90" just isn't long enough to be tucked decently and keep me wrapped up in the winter. The king blankets are just wider, but not longer. Argh. I know they are already wide enough.
Dawn, try the California king. It IS longer. Sometimes you'll hit it lucky and find them in a Big Lots type store. Otherwise, try Linens and Things or Bed, Bath and Beyond.
I'll second the cali king. It is actually longer, i think only by 4 inches, but it is not as wide as a king.
I'll keep that in mind.
